It had potential but both it and the remake screwed them up. Materia slots and leveling said materia are counterintuitive. As you're want to equip as many of them as possible for as long as possible forcing you to choose regularly between stats and slots constantly.

To which the remake made even worse. Especially since it's hard to tell just what kind of spell you're need oftentimes, so you're forced to use scan often which really should have been a costless base ability for everyone.

For how polarising ffviii was, the gf system was interesting. You could break the game so easily.

i think all the brokenness in ff2, 7, 8, tactics speaks for their possibility space. but i'm going to throw out mystic quest as one i think has potential too. it's ahead of its time in a lot of ways -- no random encounters and no game overs.

i think they whiffed on realizing that the player could have more influence on turn order if they just made axes carry a huge speed penalty.

i really want to get ahold of an ffmq hackster. assuming anyone knows what ffhackster is on CE.

I'm not a fan of the materia system.

It wasn't that tough, I'll grant. But I don't like making everyone carbon copies of each other but for Hit Points and (maybe) Attack Power.

I mean I like it, but functionally it's just equippable spells. The stat buffs/penalties never even feel significant. You can load Cloud with magic materia and still cleave through trash mobs. >_>

I prefer the job systems in the games that use them. Tend to offer comparable customization to materia, but their stat distribution makes party-building more interesting imo. Everyone in 7 just feels like Red Mages, but without any of the drawbacks that balance their versatility.

scaling only effected hp so it was fine to grind to 100 asap

Monsters all had max levels. Only the monsters on isle closest to hell / heaven could actually reach level 100 and they were always level 100 regardless of your level.

Materia has such potential for really cool shit, and yet it hasn't really been revisited and refined.

Maybe that's next phase of the indie retro wave. 32bit has been covered, now it's time for 5th gen.

FF4:TAY improved on the concept quite a lot. It's possible to hit up to 90,000 damage with them making them actually worth using.

This is one of the major reasons the game felt like such a letdown for me. Consideration of direction and aim, cool!-oh wait all these full aoe spell/vastly more powerful single techs made that totally irrelevant

Tell me, random user!: Why didnt they just make some doubles and triples with final techs!? (Dont say frog flare!)

Rant: Why doesnt Marle have a group heal, group haste or an Ice 3 type spell!?

double techs are just standard combination attacks, you can find things like it in many games.
Suikoden has shitload of these.

I always thought it was stupid that there was no level 3 ice attack in the game. And why do they even have a shadow element just for one fucking spell.

Given the weird box art and some of the wonkiness of the magic system in CT, I always thought it was the last thing to be finished and maybe was a bit rushed.

Tbh Marle/Lucca's Antipode spells tend to be pretty good for when you get them.

And Crono/Ayala's Eagle Hit is great for grinding in the Ocean Palace >_>

Most of the triple techs aren't that great, though if you grinded for Delta Attack it's pretty helpful against Giga Gaia

But considering how easy CT is, it's all just flavor anyways. Even if dropping a giant burning hypno toad on the field is sub-optimal, I'm still going to do it lmao
