TL;DW Two Jurassic Park toy reviewers received product early (as in they placed an order on legit e-tailers who happened to receive and ship the products before the intended release date) and they reviewed it. Mattel went straight to YouTube without contacting the content creators to file a copyright strike against those channels. I believe at least one channel got completely shutdown as a result.

youtube copyright is all kinds of fucked up. They recently permanently demonatized the "Ryan's Edits" channel that makes in-takes of TNG episodes.

That said, I'll always still be a little confused that toy reviewers have such a big audience, or that Mattel would be concerned abotu a plastic toy 'leaking'.

I don't really see how that runs afoul of copyright, but I guess it doesn't matter to YouTube

youtube came to the conclusion years ago that they didn't really care about individual content creators and were perfectly willing to throw them under the bus at even the hint of a legal battle regardless of how baseless the claim is.

Given it's up to the one making the claim to decide if it's legit or not... guess what happens most of the time when you dispute it?

I guess the issue is that these were toys for the upcoming Jurassic World Dominion movie and they were concerned about "spoilers"...except that if these channels were able to preorder these items, then they were already shown to the public.

Honestly the situation is all sorts of fucked and the only people who got punished were the only ones who didn't do anything wrong

I'm a collector myself and you gotta figure the toy collecting community is bigger than it's ever been before.

People that grew up with these popular IPs are now at the age where they have enough of a disposable income to where they can buy collectibles from their favorite franchises now.

It doesn't seem right that they should be able to take down a video and entire channel because someone got shipped a toy early, but if you're doing youtube stuff, especially as a job, you should be aware of this kind of stuff. It's like when people get video games early, even if it's through completely legit means.

I did an LP of an FFX mod a while back and almost every video was copyright flagged for the battle music. I contested them all and every single one got overturned lol.

There needs to be some sort of legislation that punishes Youtube heavily for enforcing bogus copyright claims. So many channels get screwed over by strikes on content that is clearly and obviously fair use it's not even funny. Of course youtube is gonna do whatever the big corporations want them to, legal or not. It's where their entire revenue stream comes from. Which is sort of the problem, because the same rings true for the people that would have enact the legislation.

Maybe a union is in order for youtubers? That could definitely fix the problem.

I don't think YouTubers would be able to unionize

Guarantee this is just Mattell avoiding a massive fine from Universal for leaking their movie stuff early.
Frontier just got hit with basically the same thing for a piece of their upcoming DLC for JWE2 leaking in a datamine. Showed a new dino no one knew was in the movies yet.

You realise that Youtube doesn't actually have a choice in the matter? If someone claims something is copyright infringement the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, means they have to remove it, whether Youtube believes it or not.
