I'm with you on that. JRPGs are so strategic and action-packed. Amazing stories and characters, too.

I feel like people only liked them because they were Japanese and once they realized that RPGs actually suck they were in too deep and had to keep the lie going.

I find I actually find action RPGs the most boring. You tend to lose the skill of straight action games and the strategy of turn based, and it often devolves into just mashing attack. That said many turn based RPGs have extremely shallow systems that often devolve into just picking attack and healing as needed. But stuff like SMT and even DQ is great at providing you a lot of strategy in battles.

It's like chess for me. One mistake can fuck up an entire encounter. Wish Final Fantasy still had ATB centered systems

For better or worse Bravely Default has taken up the role of traditional crystals, jobs, and turn based FF game. That said FFVIIR was an exciting blend of action and turn based, and I hope we see more of that.

It's kinda like card battling games, hearth stone, gwent, those games are turn based.

Then you have deck building games like slay the spire.

They are fun. You have to think a bit and then you execute your command.

A lot of Japanese action rpgs just becomes hack and slash, button mashers.

They take little coordination to beat. It's more like mental gymnastics than button mashing.

That said, I haven't played a JRPG since FF8.

"rap isn't music"

found often nearby 'i'm not a racist, but.' fuck off dude.

turn-based combat affords infinite time to think, sometimes, so it can ask a lot more of the player in terms of understanding its systems. as opposed to games that are active, and ask more of the player in terms of dexterity. this potential is never realized in any final fantasy game outside of ffx.

most turn-based jrpgs are garbage, their combat is incredibly slow, simple, or shallow so none of the complexity actually matters

I usually give up after 2 hours.

Although I've played wild arms for like 25 hours and almost come to the end but I've stopped giving a shit.

It's so boring fighting the same way for 500th battle

Most of them aren't really difficult at all, but sometimes that's just what you want to play -- something with good characters, great music, nice story, and gameplay that's simple and cathartic.

JRPGs are Japanese...? I mean the Japanese usually have a certain style to their RPGs but it's hard to categorize it all. Usually JRPGs focus on character interaction and have a grandiose plot about killing God or some nonsense, whereas Western RPGs usually emphasize freedom and exploration.

I loved them from like 1988 to like 2016. Since then I struggle to play them anymore. I can still do Tactical RPGs / Strategy but I otherwise need action. Even something like Xenoblade is okay because real time and positioning.

But not all Japanese RPGs are JRPGs, such as the Souls games. But most are, yeah.

JRPGs are easy and don't require that much strategy. You can clear most of the game by auto attacking.

Ones that I recall really loving were the Grandia games, FFX, and Atelier Iris 3. Being able to manipulate the turn order to shut down the enemies completely was a lot of fun.

That's true, in the olden days there were pretty strong distinctions between Western RPGs and JRPGs but there are games now that try to blend the strengths of both styles and some that appear more like their counterpart's old style.
