So there's a word I'm not allowed to utter. Big deal

What about dialogue in a play or movie? Is it okay to use that word to establish character? Does it matter if youre performing an old work (which might fall under academic use) or writing a new story set in a time and/or place in which that word is authentic? Does the race of the writer matter?
Yes, that is okay. Depending on things like the type of character you are portraying, the setting of the story and other such things, it would be weird to not use it. Art is allowed to get away with things that would be horrendous in real life.

person to use the n-word? In an educational setting? With your black friends? In a court room?

Or maybe never?

Due to how law works in this country you have to read statements verbatim even if it means the n-word.

Also it's okay to say if you're acting in a production I guess but the production itself needs to be respectful.

And like maybe if there's some crisis or something like a Nazi is holding a gun to your head demanding you say it.

Should never be used conversationally or educationally.

I agree, though that doesn't change the fact that it's considered socially acceptable for black people to say it, regardless of context, and I'm wondering why that is.

Just to add to this, I actually think its harmful when historical American movies don't use it and depict slavery or segregation in an almost happy way.

Gods and generals springs to mind. No slurs, all of Jacksons slaves are missing, he says he wants slaves to fight in the army as a condition for freedom (never ever ever happened) and all the slaves there are well treated and love their masters. There's no slurs or blood or abuse or violence. Everyone laughing together round the camp.

In trying to be more PC you've actually really disrespected people and altered history in a disturbing way.

Youve said before that youre half white, so that reminded me of something I used to ponder. A lot of us mixed ancestry types have backgrounds that make these discussions slippery from the start. Maybe thats why some people get upset when they do those DNA tests and are surprised theyve got a lot of European ancestry. Im guessing they dont Iike the idea of getting angry at themselves.

What if I'm half black? Do I get to say the whole word or just half of it?
Which half?
And if I find another half black person, kan we both say the full thing in unison, or do I start the first half, and they finish it?

The same way some women call each other bitch, or how gay people call each other the f-word. There are words that are not ok for people outside of the group or demographic to use.

if you're not black, you don't have the right to an opinion on how the n word is used.

Megastar rappers spam the n-word all the time in their music and their profits, fame, and influence are derived from a demographic where it's considered faux pas to say the n-word. I think that's a textbook case of hypocrisy right there.

Why do you believe that only black people should have a say in how the n-word is used when it's integrated into America's pop culture that influences the entire world?

If youre referring to someone or talking about someone: No.

If youre using it to talk about the word itself, I dont care.

Dont use it if youre on even a semi professional platform either.

It shouldnt be complicated.

People claiming never are either not black or nerds.

I feel context matters. Mostly though if it where up to me though it would be really only when directly quoting someone. Like in my line of work I should be able to say to a supervisor for instance. That inmate called officer Smith a n*****.

I informed another officer the other day that a inmate had graffitied his name is a bitch ass is a n word. Saying n word just sounds weird to me when worded like that. But I ain't risking that backlash so I roll with it.

Because like white people already took everything else from them. Like, took them out of their homes and called it civilization / colonialism. Took their food and called it southern comfort. Took their music and called it Bluegrass / country / blues / etc.

All they got left is this one fucking word and people trying to take that too. Like holy shit just let them have this one fucking thing for once.

because my mom raised me to believe that even though I'm half the world will still see myself as a black person. I'm not any culturally less black than I am white/Italian but no one ever called me anything negative about being half white/Italian. I've been called the n-word a whole bunch though by racists.
