All that stuff is fine, but it is a very poor substitute for the things that can only be achieved collectively or through the state's resources and power. Giving to the homeless is good! But it isn't going to keep rent prices in line with incomes. Not eating meat, or traveling by public transit are good ways to reduce one's carbon footprint, but it won't do much to address all of the infrustructure we've built that makes driving a car a de facto necessity for most Americans. Addressing the roots of the problems we face requires state power, and that isn't doled out on the basis of how much charity work you've done, but ostensibly via democratic means. If you can't raise public attention to an issue, you stand little chance of getting much done about it. Now, I say that having been an active member in a socialist organization for the past five years. So with regard to the noisy progressives, it does seem like the loudest online are usually contributing nothing of value to the real world (so far as improving society is concerned at least; Im sure theyre good friends and good parents). At least the ones I know personally. They have no idea how change works, so they fancy themselves activists for arguing online and not shopping at conservative business. This is not activism, of course, but they do it because it feels good and it requires no sacrifice. The same could be said of the tip jar warriors. Theyll chide others for not tipping enough, but they wont put forth the effort required to make meaningful change, like requiring employers to pay a full salary. Why? Because its easier to throw extra money at a problem than it is to organize in the real world, which requires time and effort that most people would rather spend on personal enjoyment. Anything than an occasional trip to the ballot box is too much work. I dont blame them though. Its very easy to feel insignificant and helpless. Many people want to do something to help, but they dont know what to do. But thats not the whole story and maybe shouldnt be your focus. Theyll chide others for not tipping enough, but they wont put forth the effort required to make meaningful change, like requiring employers to pay a full salary. Why? Because its easier to throw extra money at a problem than it is to organize in the real world, which requires time and effort that most people would rather spend on personal enjoyment. Anything than an occasional trip to the ballot box is too much work. I dont blame them though. Its very easy to feel insignificant and helpless. Many people want to do something to help, but they dont know what to do. But thats not the whole story and maybe shouldnt be your focus. For all the sententious ones online, there are plenty out there working together to achieve a common goal. This is actually a great post. And yes, I do tend to be provocative and generalize to get responses at first, sue me. I personally despise the not-so-small group of people I'm referring to ITT because it gives real progressive people who want to improve the world a bad rep.
