It's was in, generations ago (hence the old dudes), and it's rich, so it's artificially fashionable. Like Airpods.
Also, it's outdoor and professional, yet low-energy, thus more approachable for middle aged-old.

I get that,but I try to envision myself as playing it and it bored my envisioner

It costs money to golf but you dont have to be rich. And its popular because guys can do it while drinking.

Yeah, obviously people can like what they like but I think golf has a wide appeal and most people just never get to try.

Not rich but grew up around it and still play a decent amount. Golf has something for everyone. There are super exclusive private clubs where rich dudes can laugh at the poor while feeling important but there are a lot more cheaper public courses where normal people can unwind after work or on the weekend, have a few beers, be outside, and challenge themselves.

Its actually pretty hard to get par. So theres the challenge there. Its definitely more a game than a sport.
It was nice when i played in juniors and competed with others. We go back to the club house with coke and fries and compare scores and wait for the rest to come in to see who was the winner that week.

But i lost interest of it once i stopped competing. It wasnt fun playing by yourself. It was like playing darts. Sure i could get some 180s but no one was there to see it. Playing with 1 other friend also wasnt enough. And competing in adults competitions, were just way too many middle aged men and i was in my teen years at the time so i couldnt fit in.

I'm not rich or too old (30) but it's really fun. I played 18 holes yesterday because it was almost 70 here in NC. But people mentioned drinking, that's a big part of what makes it more fun lol. Also being able to play with friends although I went by myself. Other recreational activities +headphones also enhance the experience lol. It can be frustrating if you're not playing well, I should say. But when you hit a nice putt or drive it makes it all worth it.

It's a leisure sport that doesnt require much athleticism, and much like fishing it's mostly an excuse for guys to hang out and drink.

Yeah, just being able to drink and having a reason to walk/drive a cart is nice.

Theyre not (just) playing golf; theyre making business deals. Its also a status symbolgreens fees can be expensive.

The appeal of golf to rich assholes
-its cost prohibitive to most people. Rich dudes play on private courses where memberships costs at least 5 figures a year , even for shitty country clubs.

-its 5 hours away from the wife

-you can get hammered during it and nobody cares, in fact they drive beer over to you

It is a sport gated by expensive gear that requires 0 exercise if you got a cart and a caddy.

its a business thing, lots of wandering around huge expanses of wasted space and rarely hitting a ball means lots of time to wheel and deal.

golf is fun as shit...

I felt the same way until i played it myself

Its just a nice way to kill an afternoon outdoors on a nicely landscaped park drinking beers with a few friends

That said i cant disagree with all the complaints about how much space it takes up

And it get pricey p quick

Fwiw though: it can be not that expensive

I picked up a full set of used clubs + bag for $100

Public golf course fees arent that bad either

Imo the time commitment and learning curve is the real exclusionary part

I started playing golf about 6 years ago because of my neighbour and his buddies.

It's fun. Like others have said, it's a great way to spend some time with your buddies and drink. Rippin' around in a golf cart is fun as hell too.

i've played a few times and i agree, it's fun to play but not to watch. also got hit in the face with a golfball while playing one time which was pretty crazy and unexpected.

Golf courses are terrible wastes of land but its a sport you can play as your body gets worn down with age so I understand why some people are into it. Like you said though, Ill probably just play Mario Golf once I get too old to play other sports, lol.

They are really good games and should be more popular

the best part of playing is just being hella casual. chatting up. sharing things. then you get to hit the ball, as best you can, and then it's back to being chill as hell and enjoying. and drinking if that's your thing.

Its like the only sport you can play in your 60s since most of your body is about broken by then.

It's basically the rich man's version of going fishing.

Golf can definitely be fun. When the weather's nice it's just a social thing to hang out and drink.

Watching it on TV is a little much for me though.

Golf is so much fun, but it's not cheap. Seems pretty obvious.

My dad loved golf. My brother loves golf. I grew up playing it occasionally. I tried to like it.

Golf sucks though, and god damn is it boring to watch.

Golf is great. It can be as casual or competitive as you like. There are plenty of affordable greens fees out there.
