I feel like a lot of final battles are the heroes infiltrate/siege the final battleground.

But is there any game where the heroes must either hold out or stand their ground? Or defend a position which results in a confrontation with the final boss?

I always thought itd be much cooler to be on the defensive as a final encounter. But I cant think of games that do so. The only ones I can think of is Resident Evil when you typically have to just stay alive while a timer is running, which just coincidentally includes killing the last monster thats been stalking you.

Generally the final boss type wouldn't want to put himself in a vulnerable position at the end of things. Maybe observing from afar to gloat. But not leading the charge

Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest sort of, at least in the sense that the throne is on your side of the field for once. But you still have to push through enemy lines to defeat the final boss, which is quite difficult.

I guess sort of Mortal Kombat 11. The end of the game takes place in a situation where the villain has already technically won and you just have to stop things from getting worse.

Yea, but the few times that felt truly great is when the final boss isnt just waiting in a room.

Typically have multiple objectives could lead to more interesting final battles. Like the protagonists having to escape the final boss lair and are being delayed by something.

Or even both sides needing to secure something, but the heroes merely get there first so its a matter of defense now.

Like REmake 2 did it great. Facing a battle torn Mr. X as Leon makes his last stand on an elevator is peak excitement for me.

StarCraft 2 wings of liberty has you on the defensive the entire time on the final map

I've never done an endgame route with the Minutemen in Fallout 4, but from what I've read it sounds like it applies to this topic: the third-to-last quest involves defending the Castle against waves of Institute forces, and then the final quest (assuming you've made enemies with the Brotherhood of Steel) involves defending the Castle again from Vertibirds after your artillery strikes destroy the Prydwen.

And while the Institute endgame route doesn't fit this bill due to the player deliberately infiltrating the Boston Airport for the purpose of reprogramming Liberty Prime to shoot down the Prydwen, it does have a slight 'hold your ground' feel in that waves of generic BoS troops - as well as all the named BoS members - will sequentially swoop in on the airport and try to stop you, with Elder Maxson being the final arrival.
