Like, they offer dubs for multiple other languages, but almost never English even when it's commercially available

I always saw it the other way. They tend to wait until a dub is around before they add a show.

it is weird to see some popular ones that aren't dubbed. like i'm glad they have the sub but why not get both? there's a lot of people that will only watch dub and will refuse to watch the sub.

They have multiple shows that are sub only while Hulu has it dubbed. One Punch Man as an example

I've discovered some of my favorite anime watching the dubs on Netflix back in the day.

Reminds me that I should purchase the blu rays for them soon.

I think it's just expensive to hire english voice actors so they wait to see if there's sufficient interest.

I'm talking about cases where the dub already exists

Licensing problems, probably. The dub studio may have exclusive rights to the english version in certain territories.

Or netflix just doesnt care and is cheap af

English dubbed is the only way to watch anime imo.

I have hearing loss so I've grown up watching subtitles a lot, and it bothers me that the subtitles that Netflix uses for anime dubs is just the same translation subtitles for the japanese dubs so a lot of times they don't match up at all.

It's licensing issues. Usually the company that does the English dub has the licensing rights, so they decide. Like if the dub is done by Funimation you usually won't see it on Crunchyroll or Netflix.

One Punch Man is Viz Media. I don't know if there are any issues there. The dub was on Netflix in the past.

netflix is weird in that they also for some stupid reason use their own subs which are sometimes lacking or outright wrong.
hell, even the subs for pirated shit is almost always better since they often rip them from retail.

also, as long as we're complaining:
-one annoying as FUCK thing that afaik 3 of the big ones are guilty of(disney, nf and hbomax) is that they don't include foreign parts either encoded or part of the subs unless the whole thing is a non-english movie. this goes for long conversations that are obviously part of the plot and are present in retail versions of the movie.

-another thing they're all guilty of is when i just want subs and the ONLY option is CC subs instead of just subs without the hearing impaired descriptions like "door opens/wind blows/creaking sound is heard".

It's licensing issues, dubs have a separate contract from just getting the rights to stream the anime, which normally comes in the Japanese language to being with. Sometimes it doesn't work out or there's some legal jargon that gets in the way. It's why some animes on crunchyroll will have a shows season 1 and 3 but is missing 2 sometimes.

it is surprising, netflix is generally all about the absolute worst way to watch anime so you'd think they would be behind dubs 100%
