Using this site is absurdly difficult with all of the spam listings.

I got my last job through Indeed, but that was several years ago. Not sure how that site is running today

LinkedIn skid much too far into "we are a professional social media platform" area. Also, it has always been terrible for job searching.

I ended up applying to over a dozen places.
I got 2/3 of my jobs through Indeed actually (other job was a referral).

LinkedIn has better postings than Indeed from what I've found, but there are a ton. I wrote a program to scrape and filter it for me though. You could do that pretty easily I'm sure if you end up doing this a long time.

A dozen already? I think I've applied to a dozen total in like the past four months. Are you looking for anything specific or will you apply to pretty much anything you look qualified for? I used to do the latter, but so few companies actually interest me, but that makes it extra hard too.

15 total for the day.
Back in the day I had a userscript to do the filtering for me.

Only positions I am qualified for.

Right but I'm saying do you just apply to anything, even if you aren't all that interested in what they do? I ask cause I'm at a crossroads myself where it's like, I'm not happy at my current job, but I'm not sure I'd be happy anywhere. Trying to find that balance point because I feel half like I need to maximize my chances and half like no, let's make this right this time instead of just getting any tech job that'll take me again. Thought maybe you could relate since you seem to put a lot of stock in your career

I remember when I was job hunting some 15 years ago. Got the most job interviews from Craigslist.

My background is in linux systems programming so most of the jobs that involve that I'm interested in. Currently I'm a bit hesitant to apply in the medical device field (poor pay, but I have experience) and I will not apply for anything that requires security clearance (I'm not interested in creating software that kills people). The only time I apply to jobs where I'm not qualified is when it's a job that says that they program in Java, but also list python and C++. I don't have any real professional experience with Java, and it's really not my area of experience.
Good news is that so far I have gotten replies from 2 recruiters so far and I will have some calls to set up this week.

I can't imagine LinkedIn is great when it comes to looking through job listings -- since everything about the site is a mess -- although I'll get random offers now and again out of nowhere, just because my profile is set to public.

If you're using LinkdIn because you want to find a job, the best thing you can do is use it to figure out relevant people at a company you're interested in and reach out to them directly. Keep in mind a lot of jobs are filled without a job listing ever appearing anywhere, and some of those jobs are newly created when a candidate makes the case for that role existing.

Same.

I'm not to enthused about a lot of other stuff either but they make up a huge chunk of the industry. Telecom, finance, real estate... that makes up like 80% of what I get recruited for. Medical is a bit of a gray area for me, some of them sound like they do interesting work, but the closer I feel like it's attached to the privatization of healthcare, the less I'm interested.

Now I'm probably at like 90% of the jobs I come across, and then another 5% is some silly shit like those meal kit companies.

Anyways, good luck. I hate to highjack your topic
