Probably not. Square is on a list of companies protected by the Japanese government that can't be bought by foreign companies. Sony is more likely to continue to go after Western studios since those Japanese companies aren't on the table for Microsoft anyway.

They currently have a deal with Microsoft to put some of their games on Game Pass, so unless Sony wants to buy them out of that or something

Sony is a Japanese company but most of the PlayStation operations are based in the US now, so they're not as inclined to favor Japanese companies as one may think

Locking up SE exclusivity would be a big deal. Look at the n64/ps1 era.

There's a content war on the horizon. Owning Final Fantasy and Tomb Raider as proper Playstation IP is a pretty big boon for them to have that Sony can also leverage in their other media branches (which they are also doing).

It also means they keep a Japanese presence which they have mostly lost.

This isn't just about Microsoft vs Sony as much as people think otherwise.

Locking up SE right as you put out your own backwards compatible game pass would be a coup.

As a PC player, that's quite shit since Sony isnt prone to putting games on PC, unless Horizon and GoW is part of a larger trend

This. SE has a lot of big IP's that would give PlayStation Infinite (or whatever they're calling it) a huge draw. Especially if they include all of their old games too. I'd love to be able to play some of the old Square Soft games that have kind of fallen to the wayside.

Sony needs to buy up SE, Konami and then Capcom and maybe SNK.

Sony needs to have a new FPS done in the next 3 to 4 years to compete with CoD since it won't be on playstation after that.

With the acquisition of Bungie and whatever other ones they buy up next, they very well could compete with CoD.

They also gotta make sure that this FPS doesn't end up like Resistance or Killzone, because if there's any company who are great at killing newer IPs it's Sony

CoD needs a competitor to make Activision step it up.

The problem with any potential 'COD competitor' is that it will likely need to be multiplat in order to actually compete. Which is probably why Sony are letting Bungie stay multiplat.

I think at the very least all multiplayer focused and F2P games will be multiplat. Fortnite changed the game.

I don't think Bungie will be making a COD competitor lol and I mean that in the most positive way towards Bungie. They're not in that space and I hope they don't try to jump into it.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan says that Destiny 2 and future Bungie games will continue to be published on other platforms, including rival consoles. The advantages Bungie offers Sony is in its ability to make huge, multiplatform, live-service online games, which is something the wider organisation is eager to learn from.
"The first thing to say unequivocally is that Bungie will stay an independent, multiplatform studio and publisher. Pete [Parsons, CEO] and I have spoken about many things over recent months, and this was one of the first, and actually easiest and most straightforward, conclusions we reached together. Everybody wants the extremely large Destiny 2 community, whatever platform they're on, to be able to continue to enjoy their Destiny 2 experiences. And that approach will apply to future Bungie releases. That is unequivocal.

COD hasn't been worked out yet. Microsoft will acquire them next year so they probably haven't figured out what the new business model will be. We know at the very least that Warzone 2 (the next big F2P COD game) will remain multiplat.

I think people are thinking this is a reaction to Bethesda or Activision when everything indicates that it's more similar to Minecraft.

If Sony buys Capcom then it's mother fucking over.

Maybe but it wouldn't surprise me if Bungie has some clause in the contract to protect themselves like they have always done. They did it with Microsoft and they did it with Activision. They're not stupid. It's probably why Microsoft didn't buy them (again).

But tbh I can see all of the F2P multiplayer games from both companies going multiplat by the end of the generation. Halo Infinite hit 20 million players in a couple of months. Could have hit 50 million if it was on Playstation. Could hit more if they scale it down to Switch. Same thing would happen to any Playstation F2P game. That's a lot of money they're missing out on. Keep the campaigns console exclusive and put multiplayer everywhere. Makes a lot of sense. When these games are successful they consistently make billions.

They haven't said anything that definitive because they can't.

Future CoD games are gonna be exclusive because CoD already has their multiplatform title going forward: Warzone.

It's like people thinking that Elder Scrolls 6 will be a timed exclusive and not just an Xbox exclusive: why the hell would MS pay that much money only to have a few months to a year head start on selling the game? Sony has to do that because they either can't afford to buy a game studio outright or would violate some other contract in the process, so they just buy up exclusivity.
