Zoomers might not understand but imagine a world that seemingly existed just for you, that seemingly grew up with you, where constant significant advancements were constantly being made. Things just get better, that was the 90s standard. That's the world we grew up in. Now the world we live in is a stagnating shit stain circling the toilet bowl.

I miss the 90's and early 2000's, life was so much easier.

All of this stuff is awful (except maybe the space trips).

Yes. I've had similar thoughts that I think are misguided. The reality is that things are more public now, so more of the bad shit is out in the open than it used to be. There was so much dark and shady shit that went on in the 90s, just in the background.

Social media, as convenient as it can be, has made life really shitty

specifically from like 2012-present, I feel like thats around the time everyone finally had a smartphone. I got my first one in 2010 and most people I know still had flip phones at the time and social media wasnt super huge yet

Given that decades technically start with years ending in "1" since the Gregorian calendar has no year "0", it's no surprise to me that the Doomsday Clock was furthest from midnight in 1991, when it was clear that the Soviet Union was collapsing. It was, of course, an illusion, given that neoliberal economics still had free reign.

It's like we went back in time to the 80's...

.... Only people are starting to get what they want this time around.

Same, 37 here. I feel like the world ended up being a huge bait and switch. Growing up, things felt carefree and constantly improving. I felt like problems still existed but would be solved.

9-11 was a sort of shock to it but something surmountable. But the explosion and subsequent of the internet and social media coupled with the economic collapse, thing just feel like crud now.

I was in grad school when the economy tanked. It was still bad when I got out. Since then, it sometimes feels like society is coming apart at the seams.

I have a good job and a grad degree. But I still have anomie about the world in general like I am living in dream deferred.

What are you on about? There are tons of technological advancements now.

This was a different feeling that I can't really articulate correctly.

SNES to n64 to GameCube all felt significant. There was this natural optimistic exciting progression of things that grew as you grew. Ps4 to ps5 isn't significant at all. It's like getting a job promotion and still hating your life vs transferring to a completely different job and being happy.

There's neat scientific advancements but I don't really see those advancements providing practical use like improving our wellbeing or even offering exciting new media. Best I can think of is VR but I'm personally not a fan . In fact to add to that despite things being more advanced somehow it feels like things are more cumbersome. Again can't really properly articulate exactly what I mean but sometimes old junk is better than new crop.

social media and smart phones are making people more socially awkward as fuck in real life and addicted to technology

I miss the times when I just call up friends to make plans and meet up or ask how they're doing. Now people think its awkward to talk to people over the phone

Those born in 98/99 must have had it interesting. Lots of time to catch up and pick n' choose from what was going on in the 90's, get to see computer graphics and other computer stuff skyrocket, raised on a weird mixture of new/old cartoons, get to see Hollywood's best phase in a long long time, and if you had the right situation..... A healthy dose of the 80's. Most kids get real familiar with the 60's/70's vibes via Disney and their other toddler entertainment. I don't think there's a huge exposure specifically on 80's material tho.

Thankfully my older siblings video tapes TONS of channels during the 80's and kept all their old toys and books, so I practically got to live it. XD

It's a little less clear cut but I do think about the sense of things changing direction and starting to go downhill a lot. Less like a roller coaster and more like something isn't right and the mask is starting to slip.

i remember the 90s, all i used to think was 'man computers are really cool i cant wait for the future when theyre even cooler'
