Every promo I have ever witnessed of it during football is nothing but people crying.

My wife watches it and every episode I've watched with her is a fucking bummer I don't see the appeal

What sort of stuff happens in it?

Its an overly emotional show about sad things and people crying

It follows three triplets with flashbacks and time skips to different periods of their lives (and eventually the lives of various other people they encounter).

It's a mix of Gen X nostalgia and first world problems (like, upper class first world problems).

The characters get emotional about different things they encounter and make speeches about it to each other.

Its kind of bothersome that the characters feel the need to verbally express every emotion they feel and everything that happens in detail. I think subtlety is over rated, but I don't need to watch a scene and then see the characters emotionally describe that scene later in the episode.

I did some Wiki reading. It's seems to just be a drama. And people love those. I probably won't watch it, though...

A drama that drags the "our dad tragically died" thing on forever.

Yeah I don't watch it consistently enough to give you the rundown. Only catch an episode here or there and there's multiple characters and storylines but it seems like a show that takes itself very seriously and is kinda humorless

The few episodes I watched felt like a soap opera but with better acting.

It's a show about people trying to deal with emotional issues head-on rather than ignoring them, I think. After being in the same room as my wife watching it.....I now know why it's better to ignore emotional issues.
