Went to a bug reptile show today in LA and picked up a ton of new bugs, but this guy is what I'm most excited for. I've been looking for one for years and finally saw several of them at the show. The Archispirostreptus gigas, or the Giant African Millipede. Its still not full grown, but is already far larger than any other millipede species I've kept. One of my holy grail species that I can cross off the list.

I bet that thing squishes real good under a boot.

Kidding. I may not share your love of insects, but if this is one that you consider acquiring to be a big thing, then yay for you.

I liked and thought millipedes were so cool when I was a kid. I absolutely loathe centipedes though.

Those red centipedes are dangerous.

Millipedes are completely harmless though

I really like the big centipedes too, but I certainly wouldn't hold one like this.

8 more species of isopod to add to my collection/business. And a couple horrid king assassin bug nymphs. My wife got a spiny flower mantis too.

$150, which is a lot in a vacuum, but pretty average price for these.
10-15 years.
Nope, cant afford to buy multiples right now, but it could be cool in the future.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It was a really good show for inverts. Tons of variety in tarantulas, scorpions and true spiders. Plus a pretty good selection of mantids, grasshoppers, centipedes and even some goliath beetle larva. Wasn't great for the more rare isopods, but I picked up quite a few mid-range species. Not as impressive on the reptile side, but thats pretty standard these days. Tons and tons of ball pythons and leopard geckos ,but not much else. A few rare things here and there, but I'm still waiting to see what the next big craze is going to be in the reptile side.

I set it up today in a 16qt plastic bin with some vents added. They mostly eat plant matter, so veggies and rotting wood. They can be kept together with other giant millipedes, and will breed in captivity if you take good care of them. Not a good idea to mix species though, since they can excrete toxic sludge when stressed.
