And lower your own durability. Thats dumb. They should have higher difficulties feature more enemies or more aggressive AI.

Valkyrie Profile is the best game I've ever seen at handling difficulty levels. Really, the main thing that changes is you get way harder dungeons to explore.

Eh. It's a game focused on story. I'm just thankful when they actually have difficulties. So, I can put it on a level that makes me feel like Im actually in some type of danger.

I had so many people insist I play on a difficulty higher than normal. I thought itd be a more enriching experience but it boils down to shoot more and get hit less. Not that its terribly hard to begin with, and checkpoints are super generous. I played UC 1 and Golden Abyss on Normal, Im around ~7 chapters in on UC 2 playing on Hard

I mean what do you want, some kinda RE 4 difficulty bump where enemies actually get more clever the better your aim and actually dodge/avoid your shots, go for cover, etc?

Think about how ridiculous that sounds.

They probably told you that because it is piss easy. Even on Hard it was simple just like you said you shoot more. Uncharted series is one of the top most overrated series of all time

It's terrible in UC1 simply because enemies are nothing but bullet sponges to begin with >_>

RE7's Madhouse difficulty was pretty good. Aside from enemies having more health and dealing more damage:

  • Adds the traditional RE ink ribbon saves and removes most auto-save checkpoints
  • Decreases the amount of ammo you can find
  • Increases Jack Baker's speed, making him faster than you
  • Increases the number of enemies and where they spawn
  • Changes the location of items
  • Increases the number of collectible coins while also adding a bunch of new things to buy with them, including objects that increases various stats so long as they're kept in your inventory

That's how a most games increase difficulty, with some exceptions being:
Dark Souls because the Gravelord Covenant actually does something in NG+ for the infected.
Dark Souls II also adds more enemies iirc.
Goldeneye and Perfect Dark iirc, in addition to more objectives and higher damage output (and more enemies) they also increased enemy accuracy.
Metal Gear Solid game, specifically with European Extreme mode since It changes the game to pure stealth.
God Hand because the enemies gain new moves to slip you up.

God Hand should be a gold standard for difficulty spikes honestly, it's brilliant. Especially since Normal mode is actually the hardest mode since it can slip you up if you don't grovel on the floor and beg before it hits level DIE.

One thing I wish more games did was increasing both the damage you did to enemies as well as the damage they did to you.

Oh, KH2 had a fairly good one too.

  • Player takes double damage (compared to Standard).
  • Player deals 1.25x damage (compared to Standard).
  • Compared to Standard and Proud, Mushroom XIII deal 1.25x more damage.
  • Several abilities are granted on the third day (Reaction Boost, Finishing Plus, Draw, 2x Lucky Lucky, MP Hastera and EXP Zero).
  • Roxas's initial AP is 50.
  • AP increases by increments of 3 instead of 2.
  • Maximum potential health is 60 HP instead of 120 HP.
  • MP gains from Bonus Levels are halved.
  • EXP gained is 75% of the normal amount.
The tl;dr is that you take way more damage, but you deal slightly more, and you can equip more abilities than you would otherwise be able to.

When they added this in to Ghost of Tsushima it was incredible. Sped the game up so much.

It would be a bigger pain than usual in Uncharted since enemies often felt bullet spongy to begin with.

I liked how Halo did it. Technically it mostly is health changes. But Halo provides tools to bypass it with stuff like Plasma Pistols, shotguns, sniper rifles etc. and exposed headshots are still one hit kill so it doesn't feel like it's unfair or just grinding down health.
