I will say it's amusing that furries and weebs are some of the last groups of people where everyone can collectively advocate for their demise and face no repercussions for doing so

Thank you. As a totally open furry myself, I completely acknowledge that we're weird, and likewise agree that there's nothing wrong with that.

I like anime but I cant stand to be around most people who are REALLY into it. I dont know how to describe it other than saying stay theyre really cringey. If someone refers to themself as a weeb or an otaku then I dont really want to have anything to do with them

Anime is super weird, which can be the absolute best thing about it, especially when it reaches out into things you are already familiar with and makes them fresh new and crazy. Take some common well known western trope and weird it the fuck out into the fantastical.

A (brief) history of Furries.
40,000 years ago pictured above was made. We don't know exactly why, but theories include A) early man trying to understand the things that kill us. B) Our empathy allowing us to see qualities of ourselves in animals, and vice versa. C) We just thought they were cool and aspired to be like the wild animals we saw around us. Envious, if you will.

Statues like these would eventually evolve into religious figures. Soon religions around the world have humanoid bodies and animal heads. Many cultures play with this theme in different ways; but humans turning into animals or being part animal has been a central piece of many ancient religions.

That art and culture continues on to the modern era. Disney starts making "Funny Animal" cartoons with furry-like characters. Adult fans call themselves the Funny Animal Fandom. FAF starts getting involved in Sci-Fi conventions so that they can import anime with kemonomimi features (SF were importing mecha shows and a lot of proto-furries liked SF anyway so it was a good fit). At around the same time the X-Treme Comix scene takes off, as a rebellion against Hays era censorship and the comic books association sanitizing all their edgy old comic books. Among these, a Funny Animal fan makes Fritz the Cat. Other works start cropping up; mostly dark and edgy counter-culture comics, and before long they've got their own community. At some point the stuffed animal collectors (Fuzzies, apparently) dubbed the new community Furries and the name stuck.

The moral of the story is that Sonic the Hedgehog is god and you should watch Odd Taxi.

Furry is weird. Anime is not. It's just animation from Japan, which makes weird relative.

Those are exceptionally rare, and they're something else beyond just being a furry.

I'm pretty sure that weirdness is part of the appeal. Hence the sub-fetishes.

Furry is basically in the mainstream already, thanks to Disney, WB, and idk, stuff like Avatar.

I think anime is still in the geeky phase that video games were in ~30 years ago, barring stuff like Pokemon and maybe Dragon Ball/Sailor Moon.

I think furries continue to get their bad rep due to how open they are with their more... obscene side, plus the general lack of hygiene/STD protection/etc. There's a weird overlap of fursuits and diaper fetishists too, I guess?

Anime gets a bad rep because people are uncomfortable with sexualizing "cute" things, even though western adult animation arguably does the same thing, minus the cute part (Family Guy, South Park, etc.).

There were furries at Eugene Pride. In, like, full fursuits, and it was almost 100 degrees out! So, yeah, I dont get it, but I couldnt help but admire their dedication.

Not quite. Furries were one of the few crowds during the Gay Panic to be okay with gay people. A lot of people spread slanderous rumors about furries in much the same way rumors were spread about Raves. So when people accused furries of being a hive of degeneracy, they were really just being homophobic. Then, in an all too common example of bizarre moon-logic. Christian furries went around behaving like degenerates to prove that furries were sinful and degenerate. They basically roleplayed the slippery slope fallacy. I guess the idea was to scare the gays away or something but it didn't really work, people just got annoyed with them.

Actual degenerates latched onto this of course, so there's some small truth to the matter, but the vast majority of furries aren't that extreme with their fetishes. At least not compared to the average person these days.
