The general reason is federal prison just tends to be safer and nicer than state prison and local jails," former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told ABC News. "

Should have thought about that before you killed a man!

Give him State prison.

Yeah I'm assuming it's because he'd get more protection from the guards in a federal prison than he would in a state prison.

naah, they'll just keep him in protective custody, which is essentially solitary confinement.

I thought it was because in state prison he would be around people HE had out there and who might have it out for him.

I assumed it was because the federal government could let him out early and he's hoping some GOP president would do it for brownie points.

Brownie points with who exactly? Chauvin is universally regarded as a piece of shit killer. A presidential pardon would be unlikely from anyone unless a literal KKK or neo-nazi member is somehow elected.

I mean the people it would score brownie points with would vote republican regardless, but it would just be another way to "own the libs" to them.

he's got federal and state charges, president can only pardon federal charges i think so it would just default back to the state charges.

Federal pens are less crowded and have more security than state pens. Also, most violent offenders are in state pens as the feds go after a different type of offender to include white collar criminals.

That said, federal sentences do not allow parole and they are generally longer.

Take your pick - shorter term in greater relative danger at the state level or longer term in greater relative safety.

Chauvin appears to prefer the latter.
