Here's how Jordan Peterson and co operates.

JP: You should try to have self respect.
Fans: See, he's not such a bad guy
JP: Clean your room and look after yourself and others.
Fans: See I told you
JP: bleep bloop bleep blop bingo bango
Fans: Ah yes he speaks with such poise and sophistication
JP: Racism doesn't exist unless you include how feminazis are terrorists
Fans: Look just hear him out ok, I'm sure he'll elaborate and it will all make sense
JP: the gays shouldn't have kids, that would be unnatural and bad
Fans: Jeez people really get ethered by the guy when all he does is speak calmly, the fact that they are angry is proof that he is correct

His early work has some interesting ideas about collective unconscious and Jungian archetypes and stuff but I dont know how much real science is actually behind all that.

Once he pivoted to the weird self-help clean your room schtick he basically turns into every other conservative motivational speaker - insisting that only individual effort can overcome these rampant systemic problems (which dont exist actually, and arent systemic, and also you just need common sense!) etc. A lot of fluff that you could just as easily get from listening to that one advice song where the guy rambles about sunscreen.

Was actually pretty basic shit that any psychologist (?) could have said. Shit like "pick up as much responsibility as you can" among some other things

But he's just who I heard it from and I guess that was just when I needed to hear it. But I did that as well as made a few other changes and my life got better

I haven't listened to him for a few years though, so I don't know anything about what he's up to now. I also thought some of his deep dives into the bible were interesting

Where does he say that? Like what book. I have some stuff by him. I'm not doubting you I just want to see what he says on it.

Because that can mean a lot of things. But something like animism is pretty different from monotheism. There was a period of history, the axial age, where a lot of stuff popped up at around the same time though. But I guess he might say something like the development of a religion is always the same. Idk.

It seems like his advice applies to people who can manage it, like I've heard about a person in a restaurant getting heavily promoted through his advice, but I don't think his advice works for everyone.

No, not really. It means religion is made up because it's copied and/or nothing else than an expression of the unconscious. I mean, Carl Jung was an educated European and he was surely aware of the Enlightenment to one degree or another - even though he was, I think, a theist. It just shows that he was aware of the Enlightenment, which of course was the movement of 'public intellectuals' to defeat religion. Since I haven't read anything by Carl Jung in a long time, it would be difficult for me to point to any one quotation he made.

it can mean a lot of things in the sense that it's vague, which is why I wanted clarification. When you say religions copy each other it can mean they use the same principle of utility or they use the same motifs

Meaning the reason to have it in the first place. That's different from saying myths copy each other because they are rooted in the unconscious. One explains the reason for what the religion does and the other explains the source of the content.

I don't see how the second one is going to be scientific because if it was then wouldn't cross cultural replication experiments be pointless? Or did he do an actual experiment

Religions have causes but not reasons. Carl Jung and his ideas are compatible with this but it might not be as explicit as atheism or scientific research.

He explained this clearly in his debate with Zizek about his views on the word "Marxist". He essentially uses the term to describe any group that feels like there is some sort of oppression perpetrated by a ruling class.

Classically this would be an economic relationship between the oppressor (bourgeoisie) and the oppressed (proletariat) but it's not been extended to include any sort of group that feel their identity is being oppressed by a ruling class.

3 minutes here he explains it... if you don't like Peterson he kinda gets owned a bit by Zizek on how he keeps using the term Marxist. I think whether or not you can be fucked to listen to his explanation shows whether you are serious about understanding (not necessarily agreeing) his views or not.

You're going to have to explain

Every religion can probably be given a historical justification for why it exists. Maybe definitely is a bit much... I don't disagree, lol, originally I was just wondering if religions copy myths or justifications I guess. You mentioned Zeitgeist, which suggests myths, but I hope you see how the justification for something like polytheism against animism or monotheism is not entirely an unconscious choice, which is what would separate it from the myth copying... I don't think I've made myself more clear

Problem is two part with him honestly. One is that he's actually a good motivational speaker, which is actually a little problematic because once his personal opinions come in to his speaking, it can very easily go from inspiring someone to do better to just redirecting any self-pointed hatred/anxiety/anger to a new target which... Isn't really the best way to deal with that situation to put it lightly.

From those two points, and the fact that people looking in to him are either the type that want to play in to his opinions or people that genuinely need help with themselves, it creates what is a deceptively toxic environment. Unless you can separate them for yourself, which is harder than it sounds.
