She changed, a lot, over those years, but I always thought she was just as attractive as the day I met her. If anything, she got prettier. I don't feel bad saying it because she's pretty open about it, but she's transgender. She went from being that stereotypical dorky boy who wears gaming t-shirts, fedoras, and cargo shorts to a really fashionable woman with amazing makeup skills. She was very different, but I still loved her and thought she was the most gorgeous woman I'd ever laid eyes on. Then she broke my heart. Said some absolutely soul-destroying things to me. Admitted she had cheated on me. It was legitimately traumatizing. But she walked it back after about three weeks. Said it all had been the worst mistake of her life and she wanted to be worthy of being with me if I'd have her. Things got better for a while. She constantly told me how much she loved me, how wonderful I was, and we even got married (finally!) because she insisted. Then about six months later she did it again. Only it was so much worse this time. She's been screeching to anyone who will listen that I was this horribly abusive monster that kept her from her friends, hobbies, and any semblance of happiness. Sitting down with my friends and talking made me realize something: she'd been the abusive one. "Only" emotionally and financially, though I think it would have been easier to accept if she had hit me. All the horrible things she accused me of are things she did (and a lot of them I have the screenshots to prove it). She intentionally picked at some of my worst insecurities, just to hurt me, when I just wanted to talk to her about how we were going to handle the fact that we have an apartment, cats, and an entire life entangled together that she wants to separate. I still miss her sometimes. I even think about messaging her. Begging her to come back because despite how much what she did hurts, a part of me believes that it was a mistake. Because I sincerely believed it last time. But then I look at her pictures. Not the happy ones we took together, but new ones. She looks awful. Her eyes look sad. They looked the same way the last time she pulled this stunt, regretted it, and literally begged me for another chance. She looks like utter garbage every time I see her in real life (which is blessedly infrequent). Her voice sounds shrill. Seeing her saps away every ounce of longing I have for her. So, in my limited experience, yes, being in love with someone will kind of put a beauty filter over them. I look at her now and all I see is a strung-out, paunchy harpy. I don't see the beautiful soft girl I married. I cry every single night because I'm never going to see that sweet girl again.
