It's simple really. If you want cheap and easy? Kraft. Otherwise you follow a recipe and make much better Mac and Cheese.

I remember the horror when I first discovered that what Americans call Kraft mac and cheese is what we in the UK are sold as cheesy pasta. This is the stuff Americans keep referencing as some great childhood nostalgia food? This plastic garbage? The stuff kids here slather in ketchup to make it somewhat edible?

It's bloody horrible.

Is that really a common "american" thing? I've lived in California all my life and I've never seen anyone refer to macaroni as "noodles" until this topic. If we don't know the specific name, then it's just "pasta"

This, you either have to make a roux and buy melty cheeses, or cut corners and use cheese whiz/velvets/cream cheese

Aka boxed macaroni is nice once in a while

Just get a bowl of cheese, and a bowl of pasta, and take alternating spoonfuls of them. Cut out the middleman.

I know it as an American thing. I've seen many an argument about it on Reddit with lots of defensive Americans saying it makes perfect sense to call their individual bit of pasta "a noodle". It does seem to be the consensus.

Yeah tbh I thoroughly enjoy good food and cook labor intensive meals multiple days a week, and we still enjoy a box of the cheesiest, maybe topped with some extra cheese, always with some kielbasa, pretty regularly
