I don't know the backstory but I second all the people saying tell the cops. Get a restraining order.

Get a record of this on the books otherwise he will do it again if not to you than someone else. Even if the cops end up being useless in this instance. You want than record of what happened.

Please remember that the most likely time period for an abusive ex partner to kill a female partner is in the 2 weeks following a break up. Be careful and never ever go near him alone. If he had no problem abusing you and hitting you, you can never be sure how far he's willing to go.
