Must have been a shitty year for RPGs then if CP2077 is on the list. I have a feeling Monster Hunter Rise will walk away with this one.

Cyberpunk is great. Honestly dont get the hate for the game. Even on launch it ran well on my series x.

does no one remember how glitchy fallout 3 was on launch? Oblivion? Fallout 4? Skyrim was even a bit glitchy for a while. Lots of game breaking bugs.

Everyone remembers. And Skyrim wasn't "a bit" glitchy, it was a mess, that still isn't officially fixed.

Cyberpunk ran like complete shit on the PS4 and last gen Xbox. This is what most people have and it highly influenced the perception of the game. It even causes some people to spout absurd claims such as "Cyberpunk 2077 is not an RPG". Pre Fallout 76 Bethseda games were also highly glitchy , but nothing like Cyberpunk on last gen consoles.

Isn't Monster Hunter more "WRPG "in style? Still more JRPGs on the list though and definitely a showing of Japanese developed games. JRPGs have definitely switched places with WRPG compared to a decade ago.

The first half of the game is endless repetition, both in gameplay and story. You do the same arch five times with minor differences. The gameplay "expands" as you unlock new abilities, but fairly early on that starts to slowdown and then you just do the same thing over and over in every battle, except boss fights where you spam Reigning Slash. Somewhat mitigated if you play as Rinwell as her comboing has some complexity to it, but for everyone else, that's how it goes.

There's like 7 bosses that aren't mindless monsters who are skinswaps of regular encounters in that part of the game. There's a lack of an antagonistic presence outside of the abstract "Sauron's eye" of the level boss Lord. Everything is painfully formulaic.

And then the second half is just the worst thing ever. I won't even go into detail as to how dumb and anti-climatic it is. It's a fairly popular position so I imagine others have argued for it. As a fan of Symphonia it's bitterly disappointing how it intentionally runs with that same division motif and cocks it up.
Looking back, the only time I was really enjoying myself was in the first two realms before the combat got too stale and I was still enamoured by the gorgeous visuals, which are indeed a treat to traverse through, so it got that right at least. After that only getting a new character and having fun learning them really brought that feeling back.

And of course it has the worst DLC practice in a game I've ever played, constantly nawing at you when you boot the game up, or you're having a moment of respite. Nevermind that the character customizability is clearly hampered to sell that stuff as DLC, which includes further access to combat skills. Basically a "fun" tax. I've also never played a game that has more typos than Arise.

Yet the free costumes, for how much they hammer you with suggestions to buy the DLC, are still better than the Berseria offerings. Berseria had Katz costumes and maybe one alternate costume per character. At least Arise had pallette swaps for costumes. Kind of wish Aiphen kept his half mask for the rest of the game. His full face is way too boring.

I mean... I never had an issue with the dlc and there are far far worse dlcs that come to mind. Rock Band and the 3000+ songs that you cannot buy in any sort of bundle you have to buy individually and each of them cost a little over a dollar. Asuras Wrath had you buy a dlc to experience "the true ending", or Final Fantasy: All The Bravest which had most of its characters locked behind a pay wall.

At least this dlc is completely optional and doesn't impact the game itself.

It's still mediocre even without the glitches and performance issues.

The shortcuts they take in the open world city should rule it out from awards alone.

FH5 is on Best Racing game too.

Barely any of the panel played either game when they submitted their entries. The genre categories are often made up of "What game did I hear people talking about this year that I can list without being asked if I played them?" Which is why Twelve Minutes is in the Best Indie game category.

at base definition any game can be considered an RPG. What is the base definition of an RPG? You take on the role of someone. Well, in NHL hockey you take on the role of what team your playing. Must be an RPG. What about Tetris? You take on the role of whatever puzzle pieces you control. Must be an RPG.

For me, and this is just me, an RPG must have a few base elements.

1 - Some form of leveling system for a character you control.
2 - A central character that you control for most if not all of the game
3 - A story surrounding that central character
4 - A party that comes together to help you defeat a prominent villain
5 - Some form of overworld map.

The last one brings to mind games like Skyrim, which I argue is not an RPG, but that's just me, and I know most if not all of you would argue against me on that one, so I let it slide.

To me, I argue that Skyrim is an action adventure game with RPG elements, since you only have control over a single character, while I personally feel an RPG should be more party centric... I digress.
