Back in the day, if you played D&D and knew the names of more than 3 Lord of the Rings characters, that was a sure way to get your ass beat and that you'd never touch a girl.

We got attacked for liking this shit and now suddenly it's "cool"? Fuck off with that.

Now Dune is the latest craze and I'm like "The book has been around for decades, where the fuck have you been?"

I don't hate it, but I'm definitely still not used to it.
A few years back I was working behind a bar and had a woman compliment my shirt with the Marvel logo on it. The nerd part of me wanted to instantly grill her to see where she ranked on the "Marvel fan scale". Thankfully the socially adjusted part of me went "Thanks, your top looks cute on you".

We used to get beaten up and made fun of. We were outcasts, we were misfits, we were dysfunctional.
Now were "cool". There's nothing I hate more than being cool!
There are gaming t-shirts being sold at department stores.
I hate the modern world.

Nope. I love that more and more people are enjoying media and the culture I enjoyed growing up.

All the gatekeepers give me vibes of people who were heavily bullied in school, so now they're ultra defensive in their mid-30s about it.

Nerd stuff has always been "cool," though. Things like Star Wars, Star Trek, Indiana Jones, comics and games have always been popular. What wasn't "cool," and still isn't as an fyi, is when that's all you talk about and a lack of social skills. It wasn't your hobbies that got you beat up or kept you from getting laid.

I don't hate it but it's interesting to think about. Back then it felt like being apart of a secret club. I'd see someone with an anime shirt and it would be like, "hey, he's one of us." I made a lot of new friends like that, it felt good to find someone with the same interests outside of an anime convention or club.

I don't really mind it. I never went all in on nerd culture, so for me it just gives me more people to talk about it on the surface level.

It actually benefits most of us that people don't see grown men playing games and liking nerd shit as a negative anymore.

It is a little frustrating no longer being your hobby's demographic. A lot of people really don't like gatekeeping and the second hand embarrassment watching people attempt it is pretty bad but it would be nice if everything came with a quicker way to tell if you're in good company or not.
If it's popular it sucks is jumping the gun, but if it's popular it will suck sooner than later might be it.

I like seeing things I like in mainstream

The only part of it I'm not a fan of is the overt commercialization of properties that would have otherwise been treated with more authenticity. That's what happens when a property becomes mainstream enough to become an object of consumerist capitalism.
