SAN DIEGO (KFMB) - An unvaccinated nurse posted to social media a video of herself being walked out of a hospital in California.
It happened after Tori Jensens application for a religious exemption for a required COVID-19 vaccination was rejected.
I am being escorted out of Kaiser Permanente hospital for my religious beliefs, because I dont want to get the jab, she says in the video.
Jensen is no longer a nurse at Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center in the Kearny Mesa community. She posted videos on her Instagram page after she learned she was put on unpaid leave.
It has been determined that your request is not based on a sincerely held belief in a religious doctrine or teaching that prevents you from obtaining any COVID-19 vaccine, therefore your request has been denied, she said, reading from a denial notice. And so, I just feel like that is so subjective. This is America, we have religious freedom, and you really cant even ask me what religion I am, under my First Amendment rights. Its protected.
Jensen said she is a Christian and had prayed on whether to take the vaccine.
I prayed and God said, Hey, your God-given immune system is sufficient to fight this, she said.
She said she asked for someone from HR to explain why her religious exemption was not accepted.
Kaiser Permanente released a statement, saying in part that it found some employees had taken word-for-word language from online forms meant to help people avoid vaccine mandates.
We believe that misusing the religious exemption to avoid vaccination is disrespectful to those with sincere religious beliefs and could violate the ethical standards we expect our employees to meet, they said in the statement.
Jensen said it doesnt make sense to her to fire nurses who want to work.
This is my livelihood, this is really important to me, she said. I feel like Im being discriminated against based on my sincerely held religious belief.
When asked what she would say to patients who dont want to be around an unvaccinated nurse, she replied, Thats their choice.
Ive never gotten COVID to my knowledge, she said. Ive never given it to anyone, never put anyone in harm. I feel like I really feel confident taking care of my patients, because I have to test twice weekly, and I wear an N95. I take all the precautions.
Jensen says she plans to apply for other nursing jobs in San Diego. Shes started a website, Walkstairs.com, for workers who lost their jobs for not getting vaccinated.
It seeks to connect them with employers who dont require vaccination.
Ive been a COVID nurse since the beginning; thats what we do, were nurses, she said. Ill keep doing that - just somewhere else.

It just dont make sense bro, she was allowed to work this whole time and seemingly fine......yet now that the community is at its most highest in terms of protection and vaccination she cant? If the hospitals are in that overwhelmed etc. shouldnt they be wanting to keep as many on as possible.

Literally didnt seem to be an issue at all before the 'mandates' came in.

It's almost as if there's been some major changes in both vaccine availability and the contagiousness of the dominant circulating strain. In particular the former; you can't really mandate a vaccine that doesn't exist yet, or even one that's hard to actually get access to.

One thing is a statement of belief that is notarized. Of course if the date on that is recent then its suspect. Its another matter if you have one that is years old.

This job really wasn't meant for her.

@toyota Working in the hospital is a high risk work place, meaning there's lots of people with diseases and certain disease can spread fast. Hell a lot of harmful bacterial strains thrive at hospitals and patients can easily get them.

That being said, nurses have been required to be up to date with all their vaccines, as a condition of employment. Not just covid. Tdap, flu, hep c, etc.

Nurses and doctors help people get better, but it's also part of their job to not spread disease, especially to weaker patients.

This lady is clearly making up an excuse to not take the vaccine. She's been listening to too much conservative crap, likely fox news. She is in the wrong field if she doesn't take the vaccine. It's ridiculous they have done it for other vaccines, but they are all up in arms about covid vaccine... as if a vaccine mandate is new in the u.s. Especially her line of work.

Really, the only way you could get out of not taking the vaccine if you work in a clinic or hospital, is if you had an allergic reaction.

We know a lot more now than we did the past two years. We are actively trying to get this under control and we're tired of people with bullshit reasons getting in the way.

back then before the vaccines weren't made there wasn't a choice other than mask up and hope for the best. the first group that had the chance to get vaccinated was healthcare workers. she had plenty of time to choose to get vaccinated. it's all on her.

failure to do so puts the community at risk if that nurse gets infected, she works with the public. could infect any other patient and that patient could infect family and others.
