Jon Kent, the son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane, comes out as bisexual in the upcoming Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 comic and the news absolutely shook the comic book world when it was announced earlier this month.

The news quickly went viral, attracting attention from fans and naysayers alike. But all that attention has pushed the comic series to have "more orders for the upcoming issue than the series debut issue," an unprecedented milestone. The publisher has announced that they are also reprinting issues #1-4 of Superman: Son of Kal-El so fans can catch up on the series, which will hit stores on November 23.

Writer Tom Taylor celebrated the historic news on Twitter, clapping back at more conservative readers who said the comic would "go woke, then broke."

A comic that normally had a lower print run does something attention getting and has to go back to the printers. It's debatable if this will break current sales trends.

Those aren't actually sales, though. They're units shipped and often a less popular title will get essentially bundled with things that actually sell. It doesn't matter since CE doesn't read comics anyway. Fuck, barely anyone reads comics now.

Only thing that offends me is how sloppy the artwork on the actual kiss is. Their faces look so weird.

Based on what I've seen, looks like a shit comic.

But hardly any comics are good nowadays. You get the rare ones that are excellent, or the arcs that are great, but don't sell well so they change the artist or the writer and then it goes to shit.

I stopped reading years ago anyway, and even then, I only wanted to read the gems.

That all being said: controversy sells. And DC really likes pumping out the controversy, as evidenced by the sheer number of articles on this particular comic book.

I predicted it would sell a lot of copies, it's a gimmicky milestone that generated a lot of buzz and could become a collectors item.

I'd be very surprised if it sustains though, I imagine most casual observers who bought it will lose interest quickly.

Issue 1 was the 17th ranked book in July, it didnt even sell 70,000 units. X-Men sold 250,000 units. Batman sold 125,000 units.

Those are not good numbers for a #1 issue.

They were being vague, but even if it sold double, it wouldn't be too particularly impressive.

It just depends on the end results of sales.

Tbh they're jumping the gun here. Lets see if this hype lasts. Until they can keep those numbers then they can say its a success. If their writing and stories are good, people will probably stay.

What i suspect the likely scenario is that the first couple issues will sell very well, because of all the media attention and because activisty types want to support it, and then it'll drop down to more typical sales levels.
