I.E. a character becomes more 'realistic' by making them fat, gay/lesbian, liberal, and multi-racial. I'm not saying a superhero can't be those things at all. Meanwhile male characters, while they might become gay and such never seem to get changed all that much beyond a race shift or being turned into a woman. It very much strikes me not as an author trying to write a good story or even earning money but, instead, someone trying to inject their own personal politics and beliefs without regard to character, history, or even basic understanding.
