And by last week, I mean I assigned it on Monday and gave the kids Monday-Wednesday to work on all of their online assignments.

Plus they get one retake opportunity and only need to fix the problems they got wrong.

Ugh. Just gotta have faith they'll do it I guess. And if not this will be a lesson in time management.

How bad are the consequences for not turning it in?

I normally offer students a retake if they didn't do very well, and it's just on the problems they got wrong.

So, turning it in late = no retake.

Never heard of it.

I use a platform called "Big Ideas" which is owned by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Fun fact, I bought shares of their stock last year during covid at $3.00 a share, thinking it would go up due to virtual teaching. After two months, I sold at $2.50

And now it's worth $14.00 a share! :'D

This reminds me of this poor sap back in State University -- it was only the third week of school and this dude was failing a class bad. His grade was in the 20's.
I hate seeing other people's bad grades. It gives me anxiety. But, like, how the fuck you do that, bro? Like, it's only week 3. What were doing the whole time? Were you coming to class closing your eyes? Like, yo, were you plugging your ears during lecture or something?

I always think about that.

I've tried that. I then get 20 or so students and parents emailing me about how they/their child is working and therefore can't do the assignment.

Not really, it's just a cilindre and half a sphere. You could solve it using integrals over a solid of revolution, but why complicate things?

Not sure how that would be related.

A really interesting study was published awhile ago and showed that students will turn in things just before the due time predominantly. By making it due at 12 you inhibit their learning

By that logic TC shouldn't have given them a week either. Next time make the due date the very next day.

It that Calculus AB? Or something like that?

I teach 7th graders and we recently reviewed surface area and volume actually. Im starting to think I should teach older kids since 7th grade math is so basic lol
Not AB Calculus, no. It's "Integrated Math III", which is just a fancy way of splitting algebra and geometry across three years instead of the traditional "Algebra / Geometry / Algebra 2" that most schools do.

However, it does lay some of the foundations of calculus without actually talking about integrals and whatnot.

The kids have the formulas for surface area, volume, etc. on a handout, so I'm not asking them to memorize anything either.

If they're working until 8 or 9pm, then they're not taking a test due at 6pm either way.

I'm not disagreeing with those studies, but keep in mind that this is an assessment for learning. If they haven't learned the material, the time of day/night they are taking the assessment won't change that. I also understand that even a test can be an opportunity for learning, but I don't believe that's going to make a difference here.

This has been assigned to them for over a week now, so obviously something isn't going right. And I'll make adjustments in the future so that I get better results.

Unless you have a friend who knows all the answers, this test is not easy to cheat. The problems often have multiple components built into them. It's not something you can just take a photomath picture of.

For example, here's another problem from said test:
A 35-inch by 35-inch piece of marble that is 54 inches long is cut lengthwise along its diagonal. Find the perimeter and area of the cross section formed by the cut. Round each answer to the nearest whole number.

you realize you can just google that question and get the answer instantly

"square of length 35,

perimeter P = 4s = 4*35 = 140 u (u is arbitrary unit length, eg meters)
area A = bh/2 (one half base times height!)

A = (35*35) / 2 = 612.5 u**2 (squared arbitrary length units, eg meters**2)"

if this even wrong there are like 6 other results a student could compare to
