No spoilers please as Im not quite done (just had a run where I beat biomes 4 and 5 on my first go, died in biome 6)

they pretty much designed a world-class Metroidvania, then broke up all the rooms and randomized them

movement feels great, weapons are amazing, individual rooms are well-designed, enemy encounters are fun as hell, bosses are amazing

but the randomization of items you get on any given run breaks up the flow of the game for the worse, and Ive unlocked enough items that any given new unlock just adds more junk to the pool of stuff the RNG can give me

to be clear its still an amazing game, but it feels like it could have been a 10/10 all-timer

I've heard the roguelike stuff hurts the gameplay yea. I still wanna get it. Would you recommend it in general for someone who rarely plays roguelikes but likes the idea? Are there permanent upgrades?

Yes and yes

i too generally dont like roguelikes but it feels enough like a 3D Metroidvania (and honestly, Metroid game in general) that Im really enjoying it

there are permanent upgrades that allow you to access new areas in previous environments, and it makes it pretty easy to skip areas where youve beaten the boss if you do choose

Roguelikes almost unanimously suck IMO and the rogue mechanics only exist to pad out what is otherwise a tiny game

I hope by the time I get around to this game they'll add the ability to save and quit. Kinda worrying this still isn't in there.

Its pretty baffling they havent added it yet but I got tired of waitingits not too bad, in my experience a long run is about 2 hours

still an inconvenience but with sleep mode on the console not a huge deal
