I remember she did an interview where she talked about auditioning for a part that required a 'less than attractive' woman and, despite being told over the phone that she was 'too pretty', when she showed up in person the director or whatever took one look at her and said "you'll do".

I don't think this is a bad thing for television and movies

In the UK appearance is not considered as important as it Is in the US. Women put less effort into make up and their figures in general

But that doesn't reflect skills.

People like Craig Charles, Stephan Fry , Dawn French, that guy from Fast Show/Harry Potter /Father brown, Christopher Eccleston, Oliva Coleman etc.

All would never ever have made it in Hollywood or American TV.

And they are all far more talented than David Tennant who just has to smile to get American networks fighting over him.

Honestly I kind of find it refreshing. I'm not saying you won't fine girls who take 2 hours to get dressed and "Put on their face " to walk a fucking dog in the park, but there's considerably less.

No one in the UK would blink twice at a female mechanic or IT consultant either.

I mean when was the last hollywood movie where half the cast and extras were fat or ugly and the acting from every character was superb? because you see that in UK TV all the time

Take note of how a (probably ugly) real pickup artist does it. She probably had sex with him just because of her wounded self esteem.
