It can be, just not the way it's usually attempted.

Loosen up zoning restrictions, legalize basement apartments, back off on occupancy limits, tell NIMBYs to fuck off, resurrect the idea of flophouses, and maybe even build the equivalent of "council flats". That will accomplish vastly more than rent controls and set-asides.

It's great for tenants who are already there and never leave. Everyone else is just fucked, as those rent-controlled units never become vacant and new ones just won't exist.

so just rent control all of them and make a hard cap on profit for land owners. they will sell they apartments until someone is willing to rent at cap, and I'm sure people are. where's the flaw

while there are staffing agencies here, they can reject people with ugly resumes. i have actually been working with a job coach through a govt program for the last few months and have an interview on monday.

people start families and need bigger living spaces. sometimes people move for work. most people don't live in one place forever. new buildings can get built too. obviously such an approach would need to be supported by other strategies.

Either way I have no clue how this stuff really works, but obviously the government is not investing enough time into the issue because in some ways it's also profitable for them to have expensive property values I guess? who knows. either way the rent problem isn't just concentrated in one spot in this country.
