Watching Episode 1 right now. Its ok, but seems very slow paced.

Does it get a bit snappier?

I quite liked it, a lot of people did not. It's kind of a weird one in that it's almost an anthology series. It still focuses on the same characters and main plotline, but one episode will be more of a horror genre while another will almost be more like an exploration Indiana Jones-type genre. It also swaps focus between characters. So Atticus is the focus for the first couple of episodes, then it swaps over to another, then another.

It fell off hard.

It provides a solid picture of the black experience in the Jim Crow era.

It also has sheer bloody vengeance visited upon white people via magic and Chthulhu horrors.

Like every so often it'll go down an interesting and mysterious road and then it just comes back to "now let's kill these evil white people". And don't get me wrong, those particular white people are doing some proper Lovecraftian evil, but they also get it HARD and up the butt in one case.

While the history parts are nice, the violent parts are indulgent and gratuitous.

I just feel tonally the greater story doesn't quite know how deep into fantasy it wants to be. Does that make sense?

That does - I finished the first episode and while what happened to the racist cops is satisfying, it felt like a complete tonal shift that was a bit jarring, like someone got confused about what sort of series they were making

I liked it quite a bit actually, but I was excited to watch it when the trailers came out (and saw the talents that were working on it i.e. the cast and producers).
