I basically think of it as a linear journey through nonlinear levels and open ended combat, which definitely works with Halo, but I also think of it having a huge emphasis on fast movement and dodging, which Halo lacks.

Basically. Halo was both one of them, and what really led the genre to be something else.

Though boomer shooters exist in multi-player only too with arena shooters. Quake and unreal are the definitive boomer multi-player games lol

Console shooters can be boomer shooters too though. I mean, Doom 64, despite changing so much, was absolutely a boomer shooter, and underrated as fuck

Its a kinda a creepy term, especially when used by someone who the new generation would call a boomer.

yeah, old school Doom-style games started to phase out into what we have today around the N64 & PS1 days. So, Golden Eye & Dark Forces were among the last of them & hallmark transition games. Games like Halo & Call of Duty really strayed away from that into heavier narrative & largely perfected the basis of gameplay. So, then you ended up getting stuff like Dishonored &, earlier, Escape From Butcher Bay. Its a tunnel vision argument tho. Resident Evil 8 & Fallout 4 are actually quite popular.

Nowadays devs are largely just cashing in on that perfection. Its basically impossible to develop it further in any meaningful way. The next big leap will be VR. Were way out of the age of the light gun. Originally, the light gun was essentially just for stuff like Duck Hunt, but it ended up really taking over in the arcades. So, the first wave of VR was the same sort of field test & in no less than 5 to 10 years, gamers will put down their standard controllers for good when it comes to first-person shooters..... opting for VR visors as opposed to a screen & using whatever apparatus technology becomes popular to represent the gun weapon. Lightly a pair of joysticks, because thats just what has seemed to work since the Wii days.

Boomer shooters arent real.

cant recall another shooter where you have to pickup the weapons off the map.

other than battle Royales of course

anyway thats a tough question. halo rides a fine line between classic and modern sensibilities, but it mixes up the formula with its giant maps and vehicles and shield system enough that im willing to say it's one of the first

IDK the origin of the term but I've seen it popping up on /v/ to deride /vr/ within the last year or so.
for what it's worth, Halo isn't accepted as a "boomer" shooter in the latter's FPS general because of contempt for the two weapon system, linear maps and an incorrect attribution of recharging health to CE rather than 2.

That was Halo 2. People forget halo 1 on Xbox didn't have online play unless you did some hacky stuff through a PC.
