I remember so many shows/sitcoms havig the phone thing where instead of ringing, it would play the message (where the cool quirky character sings "speeaaak" or something) and then the caller records their message with the knowledge that people on the other end of the line can hear them

Yeah and people where legit aware you where probably listening cause "pick up I know you're there" messages would occur.

I had an answering machine built into my phone. Used to borrow my friends phones and leave creepy messages to freak my mom out. Also used to change the message randomly on it and piss my mom off.
