Confirm/Deny?

...as such, people are going to call it a failed sequel and a bad game regardless of its actual quality.

I've been thinking about this recently, because Breath of the Wild is going to be such a tough act to follow. We already know how much criticism it's facing from turbovirgins over reused assets, and while I'm looking forward to the game, I feel like it's going to get something like an 85 metascore and all hell is subsequently gonna break loose because it wasn't equally as good or better than the first game.

Like I think it'll be a fine game in its own right - I don't think it's going to be outright bad. But I feel like no matter what the devs do, it's going to pale in comparison to the first game in some degree, and the response on places like GameFAQs will be outwardly hostile and cause an entitled gamer outrage that will hardly be worth the fuss.

But I don't have to make this mistake, and I don't have to stay this way.

Eh...if it improves on some of the things people didn't like about the original (dungeons, more to do in the overworld, better sidequests, different weapon system so they wouldn't have to deal with the durability) then it'd have a hard time being worse than the original unless they screwed up something major.

Plenty of room for improvement, and they put a lot of care into the first title, so I doubt it will be worse in many capacities. The major hurdle, as I see it, is that it can't possibly have the same impact on someone who's already played the first game.

If it has proper dungeons, it'll be an automatic win

If it fixes my issues with the first game (better enemies, better weapon durability, more unique and fun "Zelda" items, actual and numerous dungeons) then it will be great. I think BOTW is a good game but not necessarily what I want out of Zelda. It mainly feels like an empty world with 2004 era physics manipulation tools that people think is amazeballs.

2004 era physics manipulation tools

HL2 was great and all, but the world interaction wasn't nearly as varied.

You can only explore Hyrule for the first time once. Even if they change up a bunch of stuff and add the stuff in the sky, it's still the same world. Exploring it won't have that same sense of wonder.

That's why I hope that they add a whole bunch of new stuff to find. People who played the original would need a reason to explore the world again.
