I mean, the way they treat their indigenous people is fucking disgraceful, like any colonized country. Even before the residential school mass graves, indigenous fishers were having their nets and equipment stolen, disturbed or destroyed, and it's escalated to the point that their boats are being burnt.

Canadians are as nice as any predominant population in a country built on the back of colonialism. Which is to say - they're perfectly pleasant on the front, but their true nature is as insidious as your own country's failings or mine.

true nature?
thats like saying you are a terrible person because of your nations history of the slave trade for example (if you are American).
How does that define the true nature of Canadians today?

We are polite, not necessarily nice, but considering a lot of Americans are neither it doesn't surprise me when they can't tell the difference.

Actually, its unfair of me to even say a lot, because I've met quite a few that were nice.

I think people confuse vocabulary and cadence with content.

Canadians talk more slowly and use more honeyed words but they can be very nasty and judgemental, especially in Quebec

True nature was a bad call on my part. I would still define it as a nature that we live with whether we realise it or not, but calling it their "true" nature might have been going a little far.

What I meant by that is as follows:

It varies from person to person, but we're all products of the environment we live in and we're beholden to the biases and nationalist rhetoric we've been internalizing for all of our lives.

I'm not excluding myself from that. This isn't a case of "wow man I've opened my eyes to the nature of my country's evil, I'm such an enlightened individual" - I'm aware to a degree of what I've internalized, but I also have blind spots and it's been a slow path to realising some of my own biases as a product of my country's culture. I'm as beholden to the racism and nationalism instilled in me over the course of my life as you are to yours - it exists in everyone who benefits from the status quo.

Our countries were built on genocide, eugenicist rhetoric survives to this day, and we mistreat our indigenous populations after everything we put them through and come out the other end jaded and bigoted because the rhetoric has been tailored to do to us as we get older. That's the same in Australia, America and Canada - with its own variations, sure - and then we have the gall to think that our nation's so much better than that.

Americans aren't inherently bad and evil because their nation had slavery. But the echoes of slavery still exist in their forefathers, in the works of philosophy by the likes of John Stuart Mill and John Locke that were used to justify slavery, and in the language and rhetoric pushed by people as recently as 60 years ago to justify continued segregation. A very small amount of people explicitly take that and run with it, but a lot of people in America are influenced by the echoes of it, because it became the foundation of the world they live in.

We all have the person we're trying to be, and we have a nature that's been baked into us from a young age that's extremely hard to acknowledge and move past. That nature, when you're a member of a prominent population in a colonized country, is going to be influenced by bigotry that's persisted in our national figures, our admired cultural milestones and even in the language we use.

White Australians have that nature. White Americans have that nature. And white Canadians have that nature. We're all affected by the atrocities committed in our country's pasts, and the justifications used to build our nations are still there, influencing us to this day.

That's what I mean when I say that a Canadian's true nature is as insidious as yours or mine. It's a generalisation I'm making, sure, but this is my reasoning for it. And by Canadian, I'm referring to the predominant demographic who preside in Canada, the same way I'm referring to the predominant population in Australia and the US.

Gay Marriage was legalized in Canada well over a decade before the US.

In 1988, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in R. v. Morgentaler that the existing law was unconstitutional, and struck down the 1969 Act.[6]The ruling found that criminalization of abortion and legal restrictions violated a womans right to life, liberty and security of the person guaranteed under Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms established in 1982.[7]

Canada has always been ahead on shit that matters.

Probably just google searches out of curiosity/emotions running high after Trump won. I can guarantee that even if it were easier very few would follow through and do it.
