Current Events > Wtf? How is PS3 still $250+?

Mine broke and Im too cheap to buy a PS4 or PS5, but I want to play Persona 5 again. I was expecting to see them for like $80-120, but how are they still so expensive??

Mine turns on and then instantly shuts itself off again. No yellow light of death, but it wont work. Everyone online is saying I can temporarily fix it, but it will break again. Does anyone have experience with this?

It's region free and I know for a fact Japanese ones go for around $60. You could easily import one for way less than $250.

I signed onto TradeMe (local version of eBay) and found one for the equivalent of about $70 US.

I do the socials for a local game store. You can get a PS3 as low as 79.99 (the weird like 12GB Super Slim) Canadian.

Average is around 120-150 Canadian.

TC is plain wrong.

I checked Amazon and thats how theyre priced there. I also looked on Craigslist and theyre considerably cheaper, but I dont think Im going to get a new one. I heard that the power supply is very likely the issue, so I might spend $10 to try and see if that fixes it.

Also, Im only looking into the phat model which plays PS1 and PS2 games.

That is a HUGE detail to omit. The reason they are expensive is because not many of them were made and getting them in working order is not easy.

For the phat model or for the charger? I see power supplies on Amazon for $10. No way Im buying a new system for this much, though.

I would save money by buying a used PS4 and it would be easier to find.

Because its a a dead product where the market isn't being supplied with new copies, and you can't play its content on the systems that replaced it so it has unique value compared to say the PS4 since the PS5 can play its software.

IIRC every PS3 could play PS1 games.

If you can sacrifice the PS2 games, it will be so much easier to find a cheap PS3.

those prices are nowhere near the actual market price.

what that means is a price at which a buyer is willing to buy, and a seller is willing to sell.

if i list my ps3 for $1000, does it mean they're worth more now? No, it doesn't.

This is the best idea. If you want to play your classic PS games, just do this instead.

You can find people selling lots of broken PS3's that you can scavenge for parts. That first generation usually busted due to bad capacitors. A recap fill fix that, there are plenty of tutorials. But if it's just the power supply that an easy swap with a busted PS3. You want one that has the yellow light of death ideally, because that means the power supply is fine and it's probably the capacitors that are bad.
