The first 3rd was great! The second 3rd was okay... and the last third was horrifying lol. What the hell happened? They milked the shit out of these 3 disconnected areas. Were they rushed? Did the Wii hold them back? Did the motion controls tweaking just eat up a shit ton of dev time?

It's nuts cuz the director of this game also made Breath of the Wild, which is phenomenal. But Skyward Sword is utter trash at the end >_>

they sure did, and that's why it's the only Zelda game i've ever started and not finished. after i had to revisit the same area for like the 3rd time i just quit. and i was really not a fan of the motion controls at all, thankfully those are optional now

I know the Wii probably held them back because concept art for the sky islands were so much more intricately designed and larger than they ended up being.

Probably why the idea is being revisited in BotW2.

But seriously, the 2nd and 3rd acts sucked, besides the desert >_>

2nd Act: Oh hey, swim through this narrow linear waterway, and then go through the 1st dungeon again and search for some random key. Oh hey, the robot got his destination wrong and you have to climb the entire mountain again while guarding it from enemies.

3rd Act: Oh hey, swim underwater in the forest for 20 minutes looking for these random-ass tadpoles. Oh hey, climb this mountain a 3rd fucking time, but this time without items.

And inbetween all that is slow as fuck flying >_> What the fuck.

Me too. There's nothing interesting in the sky beside a couple of minigame islands. It blows my mind how barren it is. Sailing was way better

The middle third for me was at least held together by its dungeons; it may have actually been my favorite section of the game just for Ancient Cistern and the Sandship. That last third, though, is just the worst sort of padding and is what really cements SS as the worst 3D Zelda.

First third is fine.

I don't understand how people are not off put by the first parts of the game before they force you to backtrack. There's literally no exploration. When I play a Zelda game, I like to go off the beaten trail and find goodies. What Skyward Sword ended up being was a bad overly linear Metroidvania game.

I definitely noticed the linearity when I first played, but I think the idea that you're constantly solving puzzles and navigating obstacles helped alleviate it. It'd be different if you were doing nothing but walking to the next dungeon with a few occasional fights.

Funny enough it's the revisits to the areas where I feel like it's less fun to navigate because I already opened up passageways and solved all the navigation puzzles.

wait what was the last third? I thought the last third were those dungeons but it's been a long time since I played it on the Wii
1st 3rd: Discover the areas for the 1st time and solve 3 dungeons for the stone tablets
2nd 3rd: Go to some new areas within those 3 and solve 3 more dungeons for sacred flames for the sword
3rd 3rd: Revisit those areas and help the dragons to get their songs to open up the passage to the triforce. No dungeons.

I liked the silent realm and the underwater music note collecting a lot

the comment about flying is a pretty funny one though, I've seen a few people streaming the remake since it just came out and struggling a lot with the flying near the very start of the story (where you have to compete with groose and crew to chase the bird). they spend a really long time on it since they can't control it well, and when they finally win they say "well I suck at this, it was just the tutorial and it was that difficult"

jokes on them, that "tutorial" is probably the most complex flying the game ever asks of you lol

Did they not fix anything with the Silent Realm garbage?

Sucks. Really wish I had a hacked Switch so I could hack in unlimited stamina. That was probably the biggest annoyance with those and the Imprisoned battles.

The Silent Realms weren't altered as far as I can tell.

I was gonna suggest that there's stamina potions that make it unlimited but I think you can't use those during Silent Realm trials.

I feel like they put most of their best ideas into the Lanayru region and its dungeons. Such a fun place to traverse...which is funny because I don't usually like desert levels.

Aside from that, Ancient Cistern was a great dungeon as well. Too bad the lead-up to it wasn't.

Yeah thats a good point, every time you return to the desert you get a new area unlocked. The same cant be said about the other two regions. I guess thats why the tadtones and stealth section in Eldin feel like total filler, as opposed to the pretty fun section in Lanayru Gorge.

Yeah, the Silent Realm parts are the highlights of the game for me. Those were extremely nerve-wreaking, but in a good way.

Otherwise, it's definitely the weakest 3D Zelda game.

I never made it past the sand sea in the Wii one tbqh. The game is just not good and is some of the worst padding I've ever experienced. I figured button controls might help a bit, and it's a lot nicer to look at than the Wii version on my HD TV, but it is just as bad a Zelda game as ever. I don't really like BOTW that much but for different reasons, but out of the main Zelda games SS is EASILY the bottom of the barrel. I have no idea how some people can say it's really good.

I mean it's crazy to think about how Zelda was thought of after Majora's Mask.

Wind Waker, too kiddy! Sailing is slow and terrible! Not enough dungeons (the only correct portion)! Triforce Quest!

Twilight Princess, too slow! Too brown and serious! Hyrule is empty! Feels stale I'm sick of the standard formula! Forced dumb waggle!

Skyward Sword, motion controls suck! Game wastes your time! Too much padding and backtracking! The sky is useless and boring!

Then they did BOTW and got the universal praise they wanted. It's like everything after OoT and MM was going in some wrong direction, one way or another, to the fanbase. I personally looooooooove WW and TP to pieces so I think people are wrong on them, but it was curious to see how they tried evolving Zelda to match the previous games issues.

Yeah I think the areas really suffered without having a field to tie them together. They were big but somehow felt more constrained.
