As a former chef I much prefer the well-done people as opposed to the medium with no pink crowd, which is just someone looking for a discount.
That said when I cut steaks I would always cut the ends of the loin for the well done steaks and always much thinner because while you may be easier to cook for I am not going to waste a good steak on someone who is going to cover it in ketchup or A1.

When I worked at Wal-Mart, one of my coworkers was mopping a floor and talking to a customer getting a steak. He found out, based on what the customer wants, he was getting the wrong kind and told the customer, who thanked him but disagreed. He proceeded to yell and curse at full volume at the customer for not getting the right steak.

He didn't get fired. He didn't even get suspended. And this wasn't his first offense. Or second, third, fourth, or fifth.

That "jawohl mein fuhrer" response was definitely insensitive, there's better ways to address the issue.

That being said, everything else TC said is pretty on-point. It's fine to make a good suggestion. What's not fine is to not only insist after a "no thx", but to imply that they're just straight-up wrong or that their own enjoyment isn't correct. That's complete and utter bullshit.

Never heard of restaurants refusing to cook steaks well-done or a waiter being pushy about how to have yours cooked until this topic. Shouldnt the waiter have been able to infer that a grown man knows how they want their steak cooked and that it isnt their first time having steak?

Restaurants shouldn't even let you choose. Just make a dish the way it's supposed to be and customers can eat it or not. Most dishes already aren't explicitly left up to the customer's discretion.

Maybe. It depends what kind of restaurant you're trying to run and how successful it is. The places I worked wouldn't do it because it could afford not to, as we never struggled to get customers in.

However, because of the kind of restaurants they were, there was a very real need to be seen to be upholding certain standards and well done steaks weren't part of that.

Medium with no pink isn't a thing. Even med well should have a small amount of pink the center.

I used to serve tables and if someone came in and said that and stuck to their guns I'd sit there and explain steak temps to them like they're a dumbass.

They don't. When I served tables I would give people a heads up if it were a lean cut that it's gonna be pretty tough and dry past medium or if it was grass fed it's gonna have an off flavor at well done. But if you still wanted it well done after I warned you I couldn't have given a shit less.

I'm not talking about how I eat my steak. I'm pointing out that there are some restaurants that won't cook them well done. I know this because I've worked in some where that has been the case.

I recognise that the majority have the whole customer is always right mentality, but not all do.

Just do medium rare if u dont want rare
