I usually say Native American, if we're talking about indigenous peoples from the Americas.

Native American make a bit more sense...except for the fact that, the content wasn't called America at the time.

I don't see Indian as being as derogatory as some would suggest.

If anything not breaking it up into tribes would be worse.

Huron or Mohawk...You tell me.

I am okay with the term Native American though.

Calling them Indian is inaccurate. There's already an ethnic group which has that title.

If you call them American Indian, it makes a distinction that they're not Indian-Indian. Of course, that might still be confusing if you call Americans of actual Indian descent Indian American.

I'm fine with anything except for "first nations"

They weren't nations. Christ. At least, Indian, while incorrect, was conceived during an Era when American wasn't known to be a continent.

Native Americans

The only reason they were ever called American Indians is because fuckboy Columbus insisted that he landed in India. And we all know that's wrong, unless you were born into generations of morons and are a moron yourself. In which case, here's the news that it's wrong.

They were never nations. You should look up what a nation is. The only true nations were the Aztec and Mayan empires. The vast majority lived in communal tribes, especially in the Canadian-American regions.

The preferred nomenclature is to address them by their tribal membership.

If you can't do that for some reason, Indian is a safer bet in casual conversation than Native American.

Typically Native American in general, sometimes I'll call them "Amerindians" if talking to someone who calls them indians. Of course if talking about a specific tribe then that, as I'm sure the various tribes didn't think of themselves as one ethnic group until Europeans arrived and out of respect for each tribe's individuality I deal with their name first.

The accent would depend on where they grew up/the people around them and not there heritage. @The_Hat

I, personally, hate the term Indigenous Folk. It sounds insulting. Idk why.

Those countries have a very different history. If Japanese people would have suffer a genocide, their land invaded, occupied and renamed by hostile foreigners, maybe we would name differently the survivors.

To be fair... that's sorta what happened to Japan, it was just far more ancient in comparison to the U.S. (the current Japanese people, aka the Yayoi weren't the original inhabitants)
