I'm going Indian. Some people are trying to say it's race, but it's obviously not.

As someone who grew up next to a reservation and worked at a Native owned casino, they don't mind being called Indian but would prefer "Native" without the American added.

Etymologically that would probably be a workaround, to just calling them Indians.

Indigenous People
That sounds more like a 'Category Label' than a Label for a specific group of people in a region.

Even in a country as small as Taiwan, we have our own Indigenous Taiwanese folks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwanese_indigenous_peoples

So "Indigenous <_Insert ____Region_Here_>" seems like a more apt name.

It's not a unified opinion but yes many of them prefer Indian. Some don't. Some prefer it and use Native American anyway to avoid confusion. It's a messy subject. The word is still being used by various tribes all across America.

This is literally the "Something else" the video I posted mocked about how the US Government took Indian away just as everyone got used to it to replace it with Native American, only to later have Native American taken away and replaced with "Something else"

I wonder how Indians descended/migrated from India feel about Indigenous Americans using the term "Indians"?

The English language needs to be corrected for more accuracy and correct usage of labels / terminology.

We can start by correcting India which is a word invented by the Greeks due to a mistranslation and forced onto the Hindus by the imperial British colonists.

When I taught this literature unit last year, I shared some research I had done. There is no consensus among the people who inhabited the Americas before Columbus arrived. Some prefer American Indian and others prefer Native American, with the former holding a slight edge. Very few liked Indigenous People. I usually said Native American Indian when I used a term at all. (We read from many cultures.)

About half of my students were (Asian) Indian or Indian American, FWIW.

First Nations is the modern term used for "One People". That's what First Nations means.

Anything else, other than referring to specific tribe names for accuracy, is a form of labelling and control.

Yes. It's also used internally among tribal communities. The US Government hasn't adopted it yet, however.

Its 2021... Indian hasn't been the proper term for native/ indigenous people for at least 25 years.

Actually far longer than that. But its been a good 25 years since that knowledge entered the public consciousness.

In Canada, we just say Native most of the time, so I think the America part is optional.

Parsing words....and no I am arguing with you, become a net loss.
You could say Native or w/e...but then it gets down to which tribe.
The next thing you know, we are arguing that Tribe really means nation.

When I go to the Indian Clinic, it literally says "Indian clinic" on the building. My mother and my siblings and I have interchanged the terms for as long as I remember. Pretty common where I am (Oklahoma, lots of natives).

However, as I did there, as far as my use I usually just say "native", "natives". No reason for me to say "Native American" in informal conversation

I used to audit tribal casinos for a living. In talking with the tribe members it was honestly 60-40 in favor of Indian for whether they preferred Indian or Native American, but most didn't really care which you used.

AFAIK there's no real preference either way and neither is considered offensive. The actual tribe name e.g., Cherokee/Sioux/Navaho/etc is the preferred.
