I've heard FFXIV has taken off but I don't know anything about it or the genre.

Was mildly curious in ESO but I heard it was not similar at all to the main series in terms of gameplay so I lost interest

ESO does have similarities and it's probably the most single player friendly console mmo

just start ff14. it's free for about a month's worth of dedicated playing and has an upcoming expansion.

buying the newest expansion also nets you each previously released expansion(fucking ALL mmos should do this).

Everytime I try an MMO, I just remember how not for me they are. It seems like you have to build a community around yourself to enjoy them and I never did that. There's too much downtime to sit there without that community keeping you company. Maybe one day I'll try to push myself into a community.

If you're a huge fan of the series there's a lot of lore and previously-unseen locations to explore. That said, it's one of the most dull, boring MMO's I've ever played. There's nothing inviting about it, every single area in the game looks dismal and muddy, and the overall gameplay loop isn't that special.

FF14 does make you play with other people sometimes, and it has tab targeting as well as a ton of different abilities to keep track of, and very little voice acting. At least in vanilla. I can't ever make myself play it past like level 10

I've played 80+ hours of ESO and I've only interacted with other players a handful of times. It's not really a social, welcoming game.

The vanilla areas aren't great I'll give you that. But the dlc areas, Morrowind and Summerset in particular, are great and showcase how good the game can be. The dungeons are fun as well

FFXIV is great and I highly recommend it to....well, literally anybody even remotely interested in story.
ESO on the other hand....I would steer clear of.

SW:TOR is pretty great up until the second expansion, where on the quality changes quite sharply. Before, it has some top quality, personalised stories to your character/class before they all get smashed together. Classes like the Imperial Agent I think rank as some of Bioware's best stuff, imo.

Basically never have to interact with another person if you don't want to either at pretty much any point.

Secret World Legends.

It plays like a singleplayer game but will help you understand basic MMO mechanics. Also it's just a really awesome ass game.

FFXIV is very good and its story is top notch. Also the base game and first expansion are part of the free trial.
