tl;dw: Girlfriend Reviews liked TLoU2. r/TheLastofUs2 gets mad af and spends a year or so expressing their anger at them (along with other YouTubers that liked the game). GF Reviews made fun of a couple angry posts with a tweet. One of the guys that was quoted (censored username) decided to fake death threats to himself with alt accounts, claimed they were from GF Reviews fans, threatened GF Reviews over email. They exposed the guy for faking the threats with an email, he then immediately deleted all his accounts on reddit and another website.

r/TheLastofUs2 doubles down on anger, accuses GF Reviews of fabricating the whole situation for attention. Probably doing so as I post if discussion about is allowed in the sub rn.

A sad, petty story. But entirely unsurprising.

No, you keep complaining about it, every day of every week, engaging in a "I hate this game" forum specifically because of how much you hate this sequel. It has transformed your life and become a defining pillar of who you are. You are defined by your hatred of a sequel.

Then, a moderately popular youtuber makes a review you disagree with, so you obsess over that person for over a year. You make things up about them to get mad at, misrepresent them. Not satiated enough, because they dared to point out that you are kind of weird, you now use alt accounts to fabricate death threats. You get exposed, delete everything because your plan backfired, and now the moderators of that forum still support you because really that reviewer started the whole thing by daring to like a game you didn't.

The populace of that sub that still exists are some of the most sad, pathetic, contemptable, useless human beings I think I've ever seen of the internet. Like, holy fucking shit, if the term "touch grass" has ever been applicable, it's to these people. Jesus christ

I've seen quite a few reviews, ranging from very positive to very negative. While I disagreed with some, I don't think any of them made me angry.

I will add that it is unfortunate these people are around. Sometimes people just want to go around saying they don't like a game when they hear discussion about it. I do that for Kingdom Hearts 3. But now you gotta worry about looking like one of the loons when you do it for TLoU2.

It's not just a product they enjoy consuming, it's integrated into their identity in a fundamental way, so when a product they deem to be "bad" comes out in a franchise they're in the fandom for, they take it incredibly personally and react in a very obsessive manner.

TLoU fans with TLoU2, Star Wars fans with TLJ, GoT fans (specifically the wackos at r/freefolk) with S7 and S8, and on and on

Star Wars is a wacky one.

I'm definitely a fan of the franchise but I don't interact with the community all that much.

But from what I've gathered, it's that they're fans of the "true" franchise (4,5,6 and sometimes the prequels) but view everything made outside of that as illegitimate and non-canon.

So when they participate in the community or their own bubble of it, it's to discuss the particular areas of it they view as legitimate, but said discussion is usually only used as a way of comparing the parts they like to the parts of it they hate.

As an example, a particular scene in the Mandalorian S2 finale included the return of a very popular character. Any discussion around said character only extended as far as how much "better" the sequence with them in it was to the Sequel Trilogy of films.

The whole thing about how they personally got offended over stuff like the title being called "Understanding The Last of Us 2" because they interpret that as people disliking TLOU2 being called dumb is such a good example of how pointless it is to try and talk sense to these people. They'll always take the most extreme interpretation of the most innocent statements to feel like the victim. I've noticed that users here do it too.

This should be yet another reminder for everyone to always take accusations of online death threats with a jar of salt, doubly so for consumer journalism where there's usually nothing at stake between reviewers and a tiny subset of viewers. Too many times people will do this as it's easy to drum up support and most won't have the tools to verify and will trust the victim.

Also the 2nd half of the GFR video where they just explain how they called BS on this dude was some of the most fun I've ever had watching a video on such a **** topic.

That subreddit convinces me that a lot of people who don't like TLOU2 are...extremely wrong in the head.
