All Joel needed to survive was learning how to hunt, fish, and make himself some kind of shelter out in the middle of nowhere so he and Tommy could survive.

Instead he chose to join a group of people that set up ambushes for unsuspecting people, killed them, and took their stuff using survival as an excuse.

Nothing in the series presents that the fireflies are even capable of producing a cure much less distributing it. The most likely outcome is Ellie dies for literally nothing.

Its not for stupid reasons though. Our country has literally murdered thousands of children for the greater good. Easy. Obama drone strikes murdered plenty of innocent children in the name of global peace. Bushs administration murdered plenty of children in the name of global peace and the acquisition of oil. Who said he was the only one? He was the only one the Fireflies had access to. Which makes sense in a country where tens, if not hundreds, of millions have died, and in a world where a medical school hasnt been open for 20+ years.

It took almost a year to develop a COVID-19 vaccine (in the most idealest of environments, mind you) and here we are months after it became available to everyone, yet the literal Government is struggling to be able to convince the population that it needs to get vaccinated in order for us to end this pandemic.

Somehow there are people ITT that think that a random group of literal terrorists will be capable of creating a vaccine in a random dilapidated hospital with limited resources, 20 years after civilization has fallen, and somehow be able to distribute it in a meaningful manner and convince the very people that witnessed them commit mass atrocities that its safe to use.

Even IF killing Ellie could yield the results that they wanted to create the vaccine (which the whole goddamn point of the ending is that we dont know) it wouldve been literally impossible to push the cure around enough to end the outbreak. Period. Just look outside the door IRL and see how people feel about a mysterious cure made by professionals, and imagine what people would feel like decades after the fall of civilization.

Lastly the complete irony of people saying that Joel was hardly a decent man as a defense to his murder quite literally refuse to acknowledge that the people Joel killed were also quite literally terrorists. Pretty much every single one. Especially the Fireflies.
