It's completely and devoid of any sense of accomplishment due to the lack of unlockable content not sure what happened to games where you simply progress in a linear fashion rather and it feeling like I looped simulator where your only objective is buying skins and hats and shit

Yeah, I can definitely see that. Though there are plenty of modern examples that subvert this.

Few games give that sense of surprise anymore, at least in the AAA sphere. You know going in exactly what youre getting. Ive been playing Yakuza: Like a Dragon recently and its been refreshing. Every few hours youll unlock some new feature or mechanic with no idea whats coming next. Its fantastic.

That is honestly the reason why I played ranked modes in FPS games now vs casual modes. I feel like I'm not really working to anything anymore and getting good at the game actually shows progress somewhat with a ranking system.

Just play Souls & Indies

Life Is Stranges episodic content was cool too.
Not all DLC/Microtransaction models are bad...

Honestly? It was no different during the 360 days anyway

Accomplishment in gaming is the hobby for some people. Just because it isnt for you doesnt mean it isnt a fair reason to game.

Ok but accomplishment has never gone away. Unlockable content is still just part of the game lol. Doesn't matter if I need 1000 gems or whatever first to obtain it.

Yeah that is the one attempt at streamlining in Skyrim they made that I thought was actually a good idea

I also don't agree with the bit about Breath of the Wild even though I do agree with the point it's trying to make. Finding progression items throughout the game is a key part of Zelda. Breath of the Wild just happens to be one instance where giving you all those items at the beginning actually works and is also an integral part of the game.

Anyway, I think modern gaming is fine. The only reason it's become unsatisfying to me is just because I'm getting older I guess and I just find it more and more difficult to actually want to play games.

Games used to be targeted towards kids who were expected to have significant amounts of free time and only occasionally people around to play with them, and now they are targeted towards adults, whose free time is often limited but who will always have access to online multiplayer. This shifts how games are built, and how they approach single player components.

I appreciate unlockables, but I'm also a completionist in games, and having a ton of stuff to work towards unlocking is fun.

That's actually one if the things I love about Pokemon: getting a livingdex (One of every pokemon in your PC, including every one of each evolution). Spider-Man PS4 was good for that too with all the costumes and collectables.

It would be dumb if you encounter a whole bunch of shrines in the open world you can't do because you don't have the equipment for it. Old Zelda games were linear.

And do people seriously miss walking back through an empty dungeon with nothing going on?

I find modern gaming satisfying because I enjoy a great world with interesting characters and plot. If I remember correctly, retro games did not have a lot of that. But that's why we have a lot of indie games now which can still make those people happy. But I'm not one of them.

I honestly think this is why rogue-lites have been getting so much traction the past few years. despite many people's gripes with their world design, procedural generation, typically understated stories, etc, they usually do an excellent job of scratching that itch. Getting just a little bit stronger, getting one more small little power up that let's you push just a little bit farther. The entire genre is basically built on exactly that feedback loop.

at least it was always there. you could chip away at that over years if you really wanted.

nowadays you'd have to do the equivalent within a couple weeks, for some unlocks (not FE, but in general)

Yea the whole open world concept isnt interesting anymore. Its actually kinda lame. I get more satisfaction out of doing something like getting all the gems in Crash Bandicoot than I do with some pointless task in a game like breath of the wild.
