Smoke from raging wildfires in the western US and Canada drifted thousands of miles east leaving a thick layer of haze over the Big Apple that made the sun glow with a red-orange hue. The smoky conditions in New York City also led to harmful air quality. On Wednesday morning, the air quality index climbed to 157 in Manhattan higher than the threshold of 100 that triggers health concerns, according to climate data nonprofit Berkeley Health. Vulnerable people, including pregnant women and the elderly, are warned that they may experience breathing difficulty, throat irritation and runny eyes when exposed to the air. Footage showed the sun appear as if it were red-orange on Tuesday evening due to the conditions. The weather conditions come after at least 83 wildfires have torn through 13 states in the West, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

This wouldn't be a problem if those lazy Californians would rake their forests...

Ironically, yes
https://www.snopes.com/news/2020/09/16/climate-change-and-forest-management-have-both-fueled-western-wildfires/
Many environmental advocates feared that even noncommercial forest management actions, such as clearing brush, thinning undergrowth and removing dead trees, could reopen the door to commercial logging. So in the mid-1990s, conservation organizations began challenging routine forest management activities.

Many environmental groups that once opposed forest management now are openly calling for more active management in the nations woodlands. But the increase in forest fires has drained agency budgets and made it difficult for federal land managers to take preventive action.

In sum, management policies have created tinderboxes in Western forests, and climate change has made it much more likely that those tinderboxes will erupt into destructive fires. A third factor is that development has expanded into once-wild areas, putting more people and property in harms way.

but what was going on in the big apple around 3 AM? reports suggest there were four human sized turtles climbing around a construction site and slaughtering men in purple and black BDSM suits.

forest fires are a natural aspect of a living forest, dead brush builds up and gets burnt awa periodically to make way for new growth. thing is fires destroy homes, so decades ago policies were put in place to reduce the risk of accidental fires and to fight anything that popped up naturally. now we've got huge tracts of land that are 100 years due for a fire with regulations and money slow to change towards a controlled burn model of management.
