Speaking at a Downing Street news briefing, Sir Patrick Vallance said: "In terms of the number of people in hospital who've been double-vaccinated, we know it's around 60% of the people being admitted to hospital with COVID.

"We do expect there to be over 1,000 people per day being hospitalised with coronavirus because of the increase in infections." But the rates should be lower than they have been previously because of the protective effects of vaccination."

He said this was not surprising "because the vaccines are not 100% effective".

"They're very, very effective, but not 100%, and as a higher proportion of the population is double-vaccinated, it's inevitable that those 10% of that very large number remain at risk, and therefore will be amongst the people who both catch the infection and end up in hospital."

Meanwhile, most regions of England now have more coronavirus patients in hospital than at any point since mid-March. Two regions - south-west England and the combined area of north-east England and Yorkshire - are back to levels last seen more than four months ago. For England as a whole, there are now 3,813 patients in hospital with COVID-19 - the highest number since 24 March.

Sir Patrick also warned said there were "high levels of COVID and they are increasing".
He said the UK was quite close to the previous "winter wave" of infections.
"In the winter wave, we were up to around 60,000 people testing positive per day," he said." We are now somewhere on towards 50,000. So we're quite close to the size of the winter wave of infections and this is going to increase. "He said the timing of the next peak of the virus would be "uncertain". He said: "But most of the models are suggesting that there should be a peak and start seeing some sort of either plateau or decrease over August."

And at that point, if things continue to increase at the rate they are - and as I said at the outset, there is something like 50,000 or near 50,000 cases per day, or positives per day, at the moment being detected - with a doubling time of 11 days, you can see that that gets to pretty high numbers very quickly.

"And another doubling time will take you to even higher numbers, of course - that would be really quite, quite worrying. So we would like to see some flattening of this, some decrease in the trajectory, and ideally, as you rightly say, you'd like to see this coming down by September, as return of schools would add another pressure on top of that."

England's deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam added the uncertainty would be "driven by human behaviour over the next four to six weeks".

He said: "So really, it is kind of in everybody's hands, yours and mine." If we are gradual and cautious, and we don't tear the pants out of this just because we're glad to have our full freedoms back, then we will materially affect the size and shape of the remainder of this epidemic curve and where the peak occurs, and how big it is.

"It is literally in the hands of the public, in terms of the behaviours."

It's also worth mentioning that in the age group with high mortality (70+) the vaccination rate is over 90%, so mathematically you will expect 9x as many vaccinated individuals to be admitted than unvaccinated. The current amount is about equal.

Antivaxxers went on a celebration lap about how "just as many vaccinated people are in the ICU" without realizing that it was a huge win for vaccines.

Not when the population being admitted to the hospital has a vaccination rate higher than 60%

That's the point everyone is missing here. Let's look at the elderly:

The vaccination rate is about 90% in the age group of 70+
Out of 1,0000 people in that group

900 vaccinated
100 unvaccinated

If there are 50 vaccinated and 50 unvaccinated people in the ICU - does that mean the vaccine didn't work?

Not too surprising imo, you gotta figure that the population who is most at-risk of hospitalization is the 65+ crowd, and they would have focused vaccination efforts on those people first. So if they are vaccinated at, say, a 90% rate and the vaccine is 80% effective, they should still be making up a significant portion of the hospitalized population.

You also have to factor in the number of people who only got 1/2 the vaccine, and those who got the AstroZeneca vaccine, both of which aren't rated with the high effectiveness against hospitalization that two does of Phizer/Moderna, or even one dose of the J&J shot are.

Honestly, this is basically everything:

Age 70+ vaccination rates in the UK: >90%, mortality ~10%
100,000 70+ people, vaccine 90% efficiency
95,000 vaccinated = 9,500 cases = 100 deaths (Cohort mortality: 0.1%)
5,000 unvaccinated = 5,000 cases = 50 deaths (Cohort mortality: 10%)

That's why you will see "more vaccinated than unvaccinated" in the hospital as rates continue to go up. Because that's how large numbers and percentages play out.

I am carrying for my parents who are older. I just hope they are okay. I don't want to accidentally give it to them. Or when they do go out some place for them to catch it. This shit is scary and most of the people don't wear mask anymore and I know those assholes are not vaxxed .

Yet again we get a taste of freedom (the perceived freedom day) and suddenly the numbers go up and new variants come about... always leading up to freedom. So lockdown 4 will happen. I suspect lockdown 5 and 6 too.

The thing is this number of infections were prevalent as the jabs were being approved for emergency use. They have been in use for a very long time now. Everyone can book it here in England and many have lined up for it. A large amount of people have been double jabbed but the number of new cases are just increasing.

Call me synical but if we have been jabbing huge numbers why are we now back to where we were in January??

Why does the government say that double jabbing is what everyone needs to do to stop this? Many people have listened to various strangers on the TV telling them to do it and many millions did get jabbed...yet the infections are still sky high and increasing at a dramatic rate.

Where is the virus model which shows Covid-19 disappearing now that millions have been double jabbed?

Not trying to promote Anti-vax but just wondering with so many people in the UK being compliant why is it back to square one?

I'm just curious about those questions.

Sure their right wing is less insane but that just makes them more dangerous because they can actually effectively do things.

Meanwhile most of the UK population embraces the right, while Trump supporters are derided by the majority of the US population.

If you're a Walking Dead fan, Trump is like Merle. The UK is like Negan.

You can make an argument either way but I'd say Negan is more dangerous.

And it went up because people ignored the resitrictions, a new variant came to play and a bunch of people refused to vax
