It was for smart people. Platformers never appealed to me. Still dont. I only play Smb3 to show other people how much they suck at it

I liked them because they had a rich story and gameplay more focused on thinking / strategy and less on reaction time / reflexes.

But I also loved Mario World, Yoshi's Island and DKC too, so

To be fair RPG's were the only games giving us more then 12 hours of solo play. Else you needed fighters, sports, shooters and other multiplayer focused games to get any real length out of them. Platformers were still more fun but they didn't last long enough to justify despite AAA status.

But these days? Nah. God I would kill for developers to stop making games over 40 hours long and open world that don't need to be. Most obvious offender being Assassins Creed. Give me a city to go wild in, fuck an open world, tighten that shit up.

I think this is a good answer. When you're 8 years old and your parents only get you one game every now and then, the long game with a story gives you pretty good value.

Rpgs are for fans of epic stories. back then rpgs were the only video games that actually had worthwhile stories. Everything else was a barebones plot

Those of us that liked having a bit more details when it comes to a game's plot other than your princess is in another castle, along with those who just like fantasy stuff in general.

Personally, I liked rpgs and other games that went way more detail into their plots and whatnot. (The ninja gaiden NES trilogy and that one game vice: project doom freaking blew my mind for their time, lol. Loved those cutscenes).

Symphony of the Night was more RPG than platformer. Might as well be an action RPG.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night didn't play like a typical platformer. I mean, it's literally half of the reason we call them metrodvanias.

Agree.

All of the stereotypical gaming tropes that modern RPGs are moving away from were running rampant in the 90s.

is this a meme? rpgs hardly ever require deep thought because they tend not to be designed with any real cleverness or intent
"just spam your strongest attack and heal when low" is such a common perception because it's actually a perfectly adequate description for the grand majority of rpgs
even "hard" rpgs like smt don't ask for more of you than to just memorize a resistance table and hit the correct attribute

I like platformers just fine, but if you know what you are doing and don't suck those games are like a few hours at most. An RPG has a lot more content, and games were really expensive back then. I still play say Mario 3, World, DKC sometimes, but it's a small investment of time and then that's it for a few years until I feel like reliving it again. An RPG is a much more involved experience.

After beating 2 or 3 RPGs as a kid they pretty much all stopped being difficult.

I largely play for the satisfaction of the grind, character development, and the story.
