I don't know that it had a definitive version. If I had to choose, I'd say the 1987 cartoon because it had the longest run of success and the biggest pop cultural influence.

On the whole, each version is different. Some slightly different; some drastically different. I think the lack of brand consolidation is the reason they've fallen out of the limelight.

I loved the 2003 series. There were so many good western cartoons in the early 2000s. TMNT, Jackie Chan, Static Shock, Teen Titans.

This. This OG cartoon is most responsible for TMNT's popularity.

Really? I think the variety in adaptations is one of its strengths. No two versions are alike!

The OG cartoon set the tone for the popularity of the franchise.

I liked the 90s live action trilogy but the first TMNT movie was the beat one. It was darker than the light hearted sequels.

Clearly not a lot of comic fans here.

Almost no one recognizes that they started as a comic series.

I watched both. The 1987 series is still the definitive version.

It's funny that I omitted the stand alone TMNT movie, the live action TV series, and the new 2018 series and not one person has complained about it.

OG comics in general but I do like a lot of contributions the other stuff brought to the series. 2007 flick was IMO the definitive Leonardo and Raphael, I liked the take on Splinter and Mikey in IDW, 2003 Shredder was tight.

I honestly think most of those voting for the original cartoon are mainly doing so because that was their introduction to the TMNT. It was my introduction to them as well, but even I don't find it to be the "definitive" version. The 2003 cartoon was the closest thing we have to an adaptation of the original Eastman and Laird comics. It's dark, serious and yet, still fun for the kids. The original really only gets props for putting the franchise on the pop culture map. Sure, it was nothing like the original comics and had a goofy tone overall, but it was a cultural phenomenon at one point. In retrospect, it's appeal can only last so long for some.

They needed to become frequently-used cameo cross-over characters long ago imo.

The more you think about it, the less fun it is. Even for the kids.
