I guess it doesn't really matter if they did or not but a few weeks ago I was talking to a coworker and while in the conversation they pulled up their phone to check their Facebook. That reminded me that Facebook exists and that I actually have an unused Facebook account from a long time ago so I made a comment to them about that. They said "I know, I tried adding you on Facebook a year ago and you never responded back." and that prompted me to download the app and check it out and sure enough they sent me a friend request like 9 months ago lol. I said some corny shit "Did you really search me up and then friend request me and never said a word to me? Were you trying to stalk me? Hmm?" and they responded back about how they saw me in a "person you might know" thing and decided to add me. But to me that doesn't really make much sense, there's no possible way Facebook would know that we know each other. Like how? I have no one added on my friend list at the time that would link me up to them or anyone else at work. And it doesn't help that as soon as I accepted their friend request that I started getting spammed friend requests by other coworkers in the next following days/week. Like I accepted their reasoning on how they found my Facebook account but I have a suspicious feeling that they were lying to me. Unless I'm completely underestimating the powers of Facebook >_>

Well, either they're lying like a psychopath or Facebook algorithm is way more powerful than we give it credit for, both are terrifying

The people you might know algorithm is some legit dystopian cyberpunk surveillance shit.

I have a fake account I use to talk to a friend. Literally no info on it besides a fake name and a random movie screenshot.

Somehow this algorithm doesnt just bring up people that my one friend knows. I mean, hes the only person I contact, so in theory, hes the only point of reference Facebook has to dig up possible friends. But no. Legit its found people I met out of state, or years ago, or whatever.

So idk how they figured it out, but its not crazy that Facebook did.

Yah, your confusion comes from not understanding how facebook works.

Besides, those "friends of friends" are just a computer spitting out people that some of your friends know in hopes you actually know the other person as well.

unless you're using a vpn, it knows where you are and where you go, and that probably plays a big role.

Hmm, this is a very reasonable answer. Didn't really think about it like that. Thanks for the answer. Though I'm still slightly confused on how this specific coworker was the only one who tried to add me all this time and no one else bothered to do despite we all work together, and everyone else started to add me only after I accepted the friend request of the first coworker. I'm still over thinking too much over a non-issue lol
