MATCH 1

Final Wishes of the Mist is something that would normally be up my alley, but there are a few things that hamper my enjoyment of this song quite a bit. I'm not a big fan of the singers during the chorus, and this is especially the case at 1:24 when the higher pitched vocals come in. It feels like the two voices clash with each other to me during that part. I could do without the wubs as well. There are good things I have to say about this song though. The beginning of this song leading up to the chorus is pretty nice, as is the "win or wipeout / how do you defend" parts (the parts with the parenthetical lyrics in dowolf's translation). The vocalist at 3:47 sounds nice when it's just her by herself singing that part of the chorus. I like it a lot more during that brief part that at any other point in the chorus.

Axis Pillar's an interesting song. I can appreciate its style. Somewhat close match, but I think Final Wishes of the Mist is more my thing, even with the things I don't like about it.

MATCH 2

Dialga's Fight to the Finish is a solid PMD song. The instruments come together really nicely to make a climactic battle theme.

I think the rhythm game comparisons that have been made are why I like this song a lot. That initial piano part at 0:09 really hooked me on this song. Just the way it's arranged is really to my liking--mainly in terms of rhythm, but it's great melodically too. The vocals being nice too makes for a good song when combined with the solid piano parts.

-Axis Pillar-- this is the falcom music I am here for. There's so many cool things about this track, but the thing that jumps out to me first is the way those three tones that the first half of the track focuses on anchors the entire track-- not just musically, but spatially. It stays in the centre while everything else pans around it, like sort of a musical clockwork contraption that revolves around, well, a central pillar. The way the synths go up and down in polymetric patterns really hammers home the point further. It's produced extremely cleanly, each layer really pops, the percussion taps out some really cool, unpredictable rhythms. That weird 'twang' sound that starts showing up at 1:36 is the best (well, no, the three tones are the best, but it's one of the best). It paints an extremely vivid picture of the setting; I can't imagine a track that makes me want to play the game more than this one.
-sometimes I ask myself 'what does second dark matter battle sound like? brain, fire it up' and this track plays in my head instead and I'm like 'god damn it brain'. This touches on some things I'm not really looking for in PMD series music (some straightforward non-ambiguous leading melodies, progressions) but it does hit a few (some of the accompaniment layers are nice in a way that remind me of some of the dungeon themes I like).
-NO IMAGE has grown on me! Sort of a blend of touhou-esque melodies and a sound that reminds me of some old anime tracks I liked from my past. The chorus is catchy in a way I like and 1:43's progression is nice.

ohhhh i wish i didnt have to vote this way in the first match. especially given the circumstances surrounding Axis Piller and me and Mycro and all that. but i do *really* like Final Wishes of the Mist and so im afraid i cant let Mycro peer pressure me into voting for his Favorite Song of All Time (TM) even if i do like it almost as much. i do still hope Axis Piller wins, despite my vote!
