Sight of Silence v Terminal March

(though of course it's still early in the contest, so this ranking might make your opinion on it seem more negative than it actually is.) this is a really misleading ranking because as i've said a bunch this contest, i really only dislike very few songs in it. so rftm is certainly in the "at least somewhat like" pile, but i've never been like a mega-fan of that specific song, i'd also say i've never disliked it. i will say i dont dislike touhou music in general, but there's a mountain of touhou tracks i like far more than rftm though. my reaction to a given touhou song is actually kinda all over the place despite how self-consistent its style is --- time <cite>Toxtricity posted [p:954292710] in VGMC] Day ... Plus, there's always room for year of Falcom in any given year, but top-tier eroge song retirees are the real prize! MATCH 1 As I mentioned in 14.5's RFtM match, I like the original Reach for the Moon a lot more. I'm a big fan of Touhou music in general, and Reach for the Moon is still a great Touhou song. This is only my third year participating in VGMC, but I haven't grown tired of this song in the slightest. Gentle Slope Cave is fun and playful! Fire Island Volcano would be my preference for the folky sounding Super Mystery Dungeon songs, but this is a good song too. I'd take it over Navi Customizer and both match 3 songs, but unfortunately, it's no match for Reach for the Moon. MATCH 2 I'm very happy that BWLAUTE BEIRRD is in! I have a slight preference for The Apple is Cast as far as Nukitashi OPs go, but this clearly turned out to be the favored song. Still, this is my favorite song in Bracket B! And honestly, it's not even close. This song had the easiest path to being a bracket champion in any of the brackets when it came to filling out the favorites brackets with none of the matches being close. Funny enough, with all that said, I can't point out a whole lot that's special about this song. It's just really good j-rock! Strong, catchy vocals and pretty much everything about this is great. I don't always go head over heels for random eroge OPs, but a song in this style has a pretty good chance of being highly liked by me. Something like "visual novel OP" is a type of song that if you sent a bunch to me at random, there's a high likelihood of me liking most, if not all of them. Tox ranked RFtM #142, deo ranked it #72, and I ranked it approx. #173. Out of a field of 192. This year's scores.... deo ranked it #51 this year (field of 256), I ranked it #49 in bracket B (field of 64), and Tox ranked 73rd out of 88. Mathematically, Tox's ranking went down while mine went up (in fact, my score changed from a 6 to a 7), and deo's ranking went up considerably this year. --- "Ah, a party! Gentle Slope Cave is playful music that skips and dances along like an excited Stufful and WOW that transition at 1:14 is great. I think this track is rad; it's whimsical but keeps itself pretty fresh with instrumentation that's both charming and well-suited to the track's mood, and when the strings step in for a more dramatic flavour they bring some really cool chord changes with them. There's a lot of references to the blue bird of happiness, huh. This is reasonably fun j-rock SHOUNEN ANIME OP and that video picture suits it. It's comfy. I'm always a bit torn about Navi Customizer-- it's cool but I keep getting stuck on the feeling that I'm waiting for something in this track that never arrives. And, well, that's probably the point! But it sits in a strange middle ground-- it feels active enough for me to look for something but not to find it. I feel pretty relaxed listening to Sight of Silence even as it gains in energy through the track-- just the feel of the bass and the mallet percussion and piano. I guess it's a relatively muted sound relative to even the other tracks in this match. It's engaging and pleasant and I like that about it. Terminal March-- much more aggressive. I think the interactions of things that are slightly detuned or a semitone or tone off the other thing that was just playing gives this a really interesting flavour. The percussion, and the specific effects to make them sound the way it does, are cool.
